Running to lose 15kg by October

Need advice. I'm 165cm, used to be 85kg.

 

When i was training from January for a half marathon in May, my weight dropped to 70kg. My regime was to run 3 times a week, 2 times of 30 minute runs and 1 run that lasted for 60 minutes or sometimes 90 minutes. After a while, my weight loss started to plateau.

 

Since the half marathon ended, I rested 2 weeks and started running again, but my weight regained up to 75kg.

 

Then with period cramps, bad weather and 2 colds, my workout has been inconsistent. The last 2 weeks has been the worst and I think I'm getting water retentive, because I'm looking very bloated lately, especially around the face.

 

I'm thinking about restarting my workout (maybe include some skipping), anyone has any idea how much running I should do a week?

 

I hope to drop up to 65kg (ideal BMI) by October.

I can see from your profile that you are female. Do you do any other type of training? Weights perhaps? Anything that's not purely cardio? What's your body shape like? Do you have specific problem areas?

Make sure your diet is clean it has a much larger effect on body composition than a few hours of running a week. Research resistance training it really is more effective on your metabolism than just cardio. I would only run every other day maybe 45 minutes tops. Do resistance training the other days and take one day off and eat clean.

As others have hinted at - you need to do weight training.

 

The more muscle you have, the higher your resting metabolism. If you run consistently, while dieting at a caloric deficit your body is going to cannibalize some of your muscle for energy. So you end up with less muscle and a slower metabolism.

 

That's not to say running isn't great for you, but it's one piece of the puzzle.

Emilia, yes I am female but havent done any weight training or cardio (gym memberships are expensive and I dont have the exercise space at home)

 

Exit, resistance training, that sounds like an idea that I can do

 

Enema, no, have not done weight training. I have not been on a weight loss diet plan as well, have been eating and a lot too, from pizzas to potato chips. I was actually surprised I manage to kick off 10kg with my current diet.

You are in the same country that I am so I can tell you the gym memberships are not always expensive. As I mentioned it in another thread, I pay £19.95 for mine a month plus £10 joining fee. This is in Central London. The gym isn't pretty, the carpet is a bit disgusting and the machines are old but it's big, has more than enough equipment to cope with a large number of people at the same time.

 

I'm echoing what the others are saying, running itself is not that effective and in my opinion it doesn't give you the best body shape. You get nice strong leggs, core and upper body with weight training. Not muscular, just strong - rather than the skinny look that excessive aerobic exercise brings.

 

Weight training is also good for variety, you would see such a difference in only 3 months.

I'm a student in this country, so being a student who came from a country when the currency is significantly smaller than pounds. Gyms here are expensive. The cheapest I found so far is 20 pounds per month with 25 pound fee.

 

But I get what you're saying, I will find a way to train weights. Thanks for all the advise :)

Good stuff, some of your classmates can help I'm sure as you need to make sure those weights are heavy enough (rather than only those hand held ones)

Best of luck. You had great success before. Unfortunately like many of us your old eating and exercise habits conspired to regain the weight after your half marathon.

Nothing will burn more calories than cardio. Walking/running will burn about 100 calories/mile, 65/km. when we maintain our eating but abruptly stop exercising we all experience weight gain. Simply. It's calories consumed vs expended. Nothing more exotic.

 

Simple upper body strengthening and core exercises help for numerous reasons. Injury prevention, form, aesthetics. But the real calorie burn is cardio. Depending upon your goals you should aim for 3x minimum per week as you had previously done. If you hope to improve, you should slowly increase your miles to about 10% per week. After a period of a few months you can incorporate speed training once or twice per week. You can substitute cycling,swimming, walking or elliptical for one or two of the runs. As far as skipping, I'm not familiar. If you like it then go for it

Buy yourself a set of ten pound dumb bells, and try gillian michaels 30 day shred... it's a great intro to how to do weight training at home, I hate video workouts, but this one really is killer... and it only requires you to have dumbbells... I'm in america, so the DVD was $10 and the hand weights were another $25... but I use them all the time!

Gotta agree with the weight training. I've pretty much done different types of exercises and I find that weight training helps me lose more within the same amount of time. If I'm not at the gym, I just make do with the dumb bells I have at home. You should get them!

Rofl you're cutting muscle. You'll come to realize that being skinny is just as bad(if not worse) than being fat. Once you do reach your "goal" you'll look in the mirror and realize that you've dug a hole for yourself that you can never get out of.
