I went swimming a couple of days ago, spending only about an hour (with a couple of breaks in between) in the water. I usually swim at night because my skin is so sensitive to the sun.

Anyway, I wore sunscreen, SPF 30, and still developed a fairly bad sunburn. About 20 minutes after I came indoors from my last dip in the pool, the insides of my arms, back of my legs, and stomach were very red and blotchy. Not like a typical sunburn. From what I know of sun poisoning - you develop very itchy blisters. This did not itch at all, and eventually faded into just slightly pink skin.

This isn't the first time it has happened, and I have mentioned it to my dermatologist, but she's never been able to see it, as it fades within a few days and I have never had an appointment with her at the right time. She says there's nothing to worry about. I just wondered if anyone else had experienced anything like this. It's very painful. Could it be like, an allergic reaction to the sun? Or is that silly?

When I go out in the sun I get a really itchy rash. I don't know if you'd have the same thing as me, but when I was reading up on it I found this page

{URL Removed}

"There is nothing specific about the rash caused by PMLE. Red blotches appear that may be raised, bumpy or hive-like. "

I don't know that's helpful, but I hope it is.

Allergic reaction to the sun, combo of sunscreen and pool chemicals ...hard to know. Do you get it if you just use sunscreen and you don't go swimming? Do you get it everywhere or only areas that are directly exposed to the sun? Since it's painful I'm not sure I'd be quick to do any experimentation with sun exposure - you may just have to get used to swimming at night... :(

Yup.

Areas directly exposed to the sun. However, it never seems to appear on/near my face.

I think honey might have been onto something with the PMLE.

Looks like the only way to prevent it is to stay out of the sun, cover up, or reapply sunscreen like every five minutes. :p
