Author SmileFace
I really don't eat canned meats. The list was from a diet plan thing - I stick to eggs. I eat canned tuna, haven't ate it in the last year but that and sardines are the only canned things I really eat. If I am a rush I may do canned chicken (when I am stuck somewhere with only a gas station) but besides that I really don't eat them. Eww, no besides hotdogs I don't any of the things you listed runner. I don't even buy cold cuts - to high in sodium). I may do shaved turkey but I rather roast my own turkey. Blog Have to say I don't like it the same way as I don't like Crossfit because they tend to focus on speed at the expense of form. Lots of repetitions of various types of exercise but not very effectively in my opinion. Are you just looking to lose weight or build strength as well? I think it's probably very true that you will have a lower body fat % but I'm not really sure what else it is good for beyond that. Interval running is much better for VO2max for example. No, I am just trying to lose weight right now and since I am not in the town where I actually live I am using what I have access to. I actually really like plyometrics outside of Insanity since it does help build speed and endurance. Which doesn't matter to me since I am not an athlete but I find it invigorating. Plus I have seen great results from plyometrics ( worked at a physical therapy office and my boss had classes, so I am pretty much aware of keeping good form, I have no problem pausing a video to make sure I am using good form). However I am way more into weight lifting but I don't have access to a gym. Which I will start back when I move back. I have lapsed on my workouts in the last year with moving but haven't gained much weight from when I was lifting daily but can't fit into most of my clothes - even tho I only gained 5 pounds on the scale. So I am hoping with my higher body fat I will be able to drop weight quicker and then resume lifting. Since skinny fat isn't the goal. The workout is full of interval training - I really don't see how it won't be as good for vo2max. Plus I rather pick up swimming rather than running.

Sure if you don't want to run but would rather swim it's a personal choice. I box and find that the 3 minute on 1 minute off isn't quite long enough for vo2max. I spoke to a boxer and ultra marathon runner friend of mine and we agreed that interval training using 400 meter runs coupled with 400 meter walks are better for your VO2max than boxing or something like insanity - but since you don't want to run it doesn't make any difference to you. It's good that you use good form, I see so many people neglecting it and they don't progress beyond a certain level. Hope you get to the level you want to get to, weight lifting is great. I think I've found shoulder press the best for losing fat from the midrif. Quite amazing actually.

Believe I love running but it is something I would do seasonal. Working in rehabilitation environment makes me uneasy about most things. I spend hours practicing form with the help of my exboss who published 2 books on it,when lifting and like that it is something I can control. Thanks I am hoping I get to the level I want to be.
Emilia
Only reason I don't run is because the damage it can do to my knees and piriformis. Didn't know about piriformis but I do recognise the issue of wear and tear. Middle-distance running works for me (hence the 400 metre interval training for example, good way to increase speed plus I don't have the patience for long distance) but my friend's obsession with ultra marathons doesn't seem healthy. He is going to run the marathon des sables next year. Personally I think it's nuts. You are very lucky to have a boss like that, most of us would kill a training partner who knows what they are doing.

The piriformis and knee pain can be related. If your piriformis is hurting, that's often a sign of weak glutes. For me as a man it was also a lack of hip internal rotation, which I managed to remedy with deep full squats. For women this is less likely though as they often have too much hip internal rotation instead of too little.

AlexDP
I haven't dealt with the pain myself but just many patients who ran only as hobby. Running doesn't necessarily cause knee and piriformis pain. Running poorly does. But running poorly is most often the result of weakness anyway. That being said: if running scares you that much, don't do it.
Emilia
I think it's a shame that so many people who run, don't do some form of strength training as well. It would make such a difference, even just in terms of learning about how their body functions more.

I really feel bad for people that don't take the time to train their bodies for such vigorous exercise. Especially something as running that anything from bad posture to bad terrain to bad running shoes can have a big impact.

The SAID principle at work. There was even a recent study done on this, I can send you a link if you're interested.

Personally I only run in Vibram FiveFingers or New Balance Minimus. My running form is so much better in these shoes and running is so much more fun that I'd be crazy not to. AlexDP
Finding Your Ideal Running Form - NYTimes.com Here's a link. It's an article about the study. While I do agree with the fact that you will become better at running just by running, I still think strength training is essential or at least it is for me.

Author SmileFace
I should be moving closer to a park again and will have access to track rather than the treadmill or running on concrete. I do generally over think things, lol. I find the FiveFingers pretty interesting.
