Necromancer
I have seen few gals who where in good shape get bloated like a whale in few months. Being fat is not genetics (unless rare cases). Almost anyone can be in average shape. people get all defensive about fat people and blame genetics......guess what, its not your genetics it's your crap diet and no exercise. People want always the easy way out.
kiss_andmakeup
Yaaaaay another fatty-bashing thread. Shouldn't we start a skinny-bashing, "real women have curves" thread as well, just to balance it out? Then we can start similar threads about men. Let's just make sure no one leaves this site feeling good about themselves. Ready.......go! My popcorn is ready.

Quiet Storm
I have a curvy body type and am short, so every pound shows. What really helped me get off the baby weight and stay slim was limiting carbs and sugar. Your body burns carbs & sugar as energy first, and when that source is depleted, it burns fat. The less carb & sugars you eat, the quicker your body will burn the fat as energy, even if you're just walking around or sleeping. It really works for me. I went from 120 to almost 170 during my three pregnancies and got it all off limiting my carb and sugar intake. I get my carbs from fruits and veggies, not bread, sugar or pasta. When you stop eating that crap, you don't crave it anymore. Protein will fill you up for hours, and you won't even be hungry.
Mme. Chaucer
It's none of your business how fat or not fat other people are, unless they are someone near and dear to you and you're concerned about their well-being.
Eternal Sunshine
Yep OP, there is actually no scientific proof that some people have significantly slower metabolism than others. Sans some extremely rare medical condtions, it's all about simple calories in/calories out.
Titanwolf
Crap diet or not, if you're eating more than your body can burn by the end of the day, you will gain weight period. Brb Ben and Jerry's every night. If you want semi-instant, short-term results, reduce carbs (including sugar, excluding fibrous veggies) and you'll hold less water. Viola, temporary relief for that upcoming wedding

People want always the easy way out. Its not just genetics, but its ignorant of you not to acknowledge the large role they can play in someones weight. The diet Ive eaten my whole life would make my best friend gain an extra 25 lbs if he didnt work out. Im lucky that Ive always had a wicked high metabolism. Hes not as lucky. I go to the gym and give props to big people trying to get in shape. Dont be a douche who takes his genetics for granted. It can be very hard for some people to lose weight...and I wont ever pretend to know how hard it is.

coolheadal
It's call safe zone. Some women might want to add on the extra pounds as long as the mate they have don't care about it. OP sounds like you care. If she going to add on the pounds but you still care about her then why thing about it. This is a cycle people have. You add the pounds on you take them off. Most eat more because they're unhappy or something is not going right in they're life right now. Media and adverts on TV, Mags, Newspaper, Bill Boards don't help. They suck you into the bad eating habits. Look at a bottle of tomato ketchup. It has so much fatty stuff in there you might has well don't even bother to use it. Too much fat products out there so this doesn't help you. If you know someone that has some extra pounds why now help them work on it take them jogging do something with them to help them stop eating the junk food.

Im a slim bastard who needs to put on some pounds and build some muscle. Real men have that V shape and are cut up like Ronaldo. I'm a skinny bitch with knobby shoulders, a visible ribcage, and modest breasts. I wish I had big bodacious curves, because without them I am not a real woman. I also wish people would start using the word "bodacious" again. Preferably in conjunction with the word "babe."

I dunno...when I was a teenager and college student I ate whatever the hell I wanted...I think about the things I used to eat and shudder. Pizza, chicken fingers, fries, candy bars... I was always rail thin. I can still eat like that if I want to and stay relatively thin (~125lbs at 5'8"), but in the past 4 years or so I've become a lot more health conscious. I still don't restrict myself, I eat when I'm hungry, and I go out to eat once a week or so and order what I want. I drink beer. I just try to make healthier choices as often as I can. This keeps me around 110 which is actually my preferred weight. I do eat vegetarian which might help a bit, but we all know plenty of fat vegetarians. A lot of people assume I must starve myself or religiously count calories but it just isn't the case.

I watch and read all the labels on the boxes or jars. I eat more Organic and juice veggies. This is what I want to do an exercise. I don't eat meat from the 2-4 legged animals anymore. Now and then I'll eat Salmon stuff like this I never bother with but I need to stay healthy and keep that racket doctor at bay..

My point was just a counter-argument to ES's post about metabolism not having much effect on weight. It clearly did for me, because most people who ate the way I did at that time would have weighed 200lbs.
kiss_andmakeup
What in the hell? 110 is too skinny at 5'6 and you're 5'8 at that height? Jesus, at least get to 120-130 ish. You must be borderline anorexic The only time I've ever seen a girl with an appealing figure at 110 LBs, she was like 5'3 Ah, here we go, the anorexic thing. Trust me, I am not anorexic. I'm small-framed and light-boned. If you saw me in person you'd likely think I was thin (or too thin for your tastes), but not sickly. The other day a co-worker of mine commented on, how could I possibly be so thin but still have boobs and a butt? It made my day because I'd always assumed my "curves" weren't "curvy" enough for people to notice. Someone who consumes beer, pizza, and thai food at the rate I do is disqualified from being considered anorexic. As I stated VERY clearly in my last post, I have a high metabolism and always have. As a teen I ate junk CONSTANTLY and weighed only 100lbs. I just could't put on weight...it's the way my body is built and works. Thanks for adding to the droves of presumptuous and judgmental people who assume any thin girl must be anorexic. As far as what you find appealing, I frankly couldn't care less. :] My doctor says I'm healthy and all my levels are normal, my boyfriend thinks I'm beautiful (he's a physician too, so does that count as a second opinion?), and above all I'm comfortable in my body. Thanks for your unsolicited input, though. Edited September 8, 2012 by kiss_andmakeup

A lot of people assume I must starve myself or religiously count calories but it just isn't the case. Well, the study was done on few 1000s of people and published in a well known journal. It's not just based on my experience. There are couple of possibilities. There are always "extremes", people that don't follow the law of averages. You could be one of those, it still doesn't disprove anything. Then, it is also possible to eat junk and not consume that many calories in total. You can lose weight on pizza and chocolate (I have done it) as long as you are in an overall calorie deficit. Which would depend on your portion sizes and activity levels. There has been a documentary that followed couple of girls for 2 weeks. One claimed to "eat barely anything and is still overweight". The other claimed to "eat what she wanted and is at low end of a normal weight". When they totaled their calories over the 2 week period, the overweight girl ate nearly twice as much calorific value. The amount of food one eats is very subjective.

Pizza, chicken fingers, fries, candy bars... I was always rail thin. I doubt you ate a whole large pizza or 10 candy bars though. I've seen women eat who claimed that before, and they never really ate much. It's all about the portions. I'm with Necromancer. I don't mind people being overweight, and I've found heavier women very sexy before. It gets annoying though when someone who's 300 pounds starts claiming they have bad genetics, overactive thyroid, bad metabolism, eat nothing but salads and walk 5 miles a day. You just know you're getting lied to. You don't stay that weight unless you're eating major amounts of food every day.

I've seen women eat who claimed that before, and they never really ate much. It's all about the portions. Of course not. But I guarantee I ate at least 2000-2500 calories a day and in many cases more. There was no reason for me to be so severely underweight when it came to my diet.
IcedEarth
There are TONS of rail thin people who can eat McDonalds for three meals a day and never gain weight. If that's the case, wouldn't some fat people be the same? It doesn't excuse most people, but some? Yeah.

I'm not saying you should eat so much at all, just perhaps you could monitor your eating habits for a week or so to understand them better. I need to eat about 2500 calories a day because of my exercise regime and it's not easy!
RiverRunning
I don't care if a woman is 'underweight,' I don't care if she has knobby knees or a 'boyish' figure, I don't care if she's very curvy with her hourglass figure...people come in all shapes, sizes and builds. I do not believe that only one can be attractive or 'worthwhile.' I also don't believe that the BMI is an absolute rule. Some people are more lightly built than the BMI recognizes. As long as their nutrition intake is adequate and they're healthy there, I don't believe that the external body is that important. Why do other people care so much if people want to use genetics as an excuse for their weight? Is it because you think fat people are an eye sore? If you want to help, start educating people on nutrition and exercise. Start with your family and friends if you want. But I can guarantee almost anyone who uses that excuse knows that it's not truly genetics causing their weight gain, but it's an easy way to try and get other people off their backs. I gain weight very easily - and I track every bite that I eat. My measuring cups are constantly in use and I rarely go out to eat. If I eat 2k calories a day (and I'm physically active - I burn about 4 - 5k calories a week. I'm also 5'8" and about 190ish pounds), I usually maintain my weight. I do not eat high-sodium foods. We also need to recognize here that most men have a NATURAL advantage when it comes to burning calories. The average guy who is my height, age, weight, etc., will burn about 200 - 300 more calories per day than I do with no other difference between us except for gender. I've lost 100 pounds and the caloric difference per day is about 400 calories less a day. 100 extra calories per day would lead me to gain 25 pounds over time. That's NOTHING. A few off measurements with your food throughout the day. Suddenly, it becomes very understandable to see why so many people are so overweight. I wish the moral judgments on fat people would stop. These threads are NEVER about a person's health, but about somebody's aesthetic entertainment. I don't care if you don't like how women look - they are not there for your pleasure or entertainment. And how awful that a member here was told that they must look 'anorexic' based on some descriptions. For all I know, she's well-muscled and her body weight can't tell me that. Even if she's not muscular, her body and her weight are hers to worry about, not for other people to pick at and criticize. Maybe we should all start threads about how unattractive short guys are, or guys with pot bellies, or guys who are obese, or guys with fat arms, or any other number of body critical things. Funny how in the entire time I've been on LS, I have not seen one thread criticizing a guy for being too fat or too thin. I have seen 'short guy' threads, but mostly in response to threads like this - it's meant to be a tongue-in-cheek 'taste your own medicine' sort of thing. The body-shaming really needs to stop. It's so tired and so old, and the only thing threads like this accomplish is building up shame in people who may actually need help. They should not feel badly about their bodies, as that's counterproductive: shaming people does not lead to weight loss, weight gain, or any other number of things.
