Was reading about OCD and noticed that I have real syndromes. I will be 30 soon, have obtained few degrees in several sciences and have a wonderful job. I have a strong willpower. Now when I recognized that I am sick can I handle the obsessions and compulsion without professional help? Any experience? I will never visit a shrink.

Why not?

They can help.

All you will do is what your doing now at LS.

We are all little pretend shrinks here in LS, (at least thats how I feel when I give advice). I'm going to start charging. jk lol.

But I think if you seriously think you have this problem you need to speak to a professional that can help you understand your condition further and how to deal with it.

What are you scared of?

She's Come Undone

Why not try a LPC? I finally went yesterday. She suggested Post Traumatic Stress, something that had NEVER occured to me! I'm so glad I will be seeing her again.

The science these days has shown that most mental ailments are actually biochemical, rather than caused by 'wrong-thinking'. Which means that if you are suffering from one of these ailments, it's no different from being diabetic or having a heart condition. Your brain is just another organ that gets sick like the rest of the organs.

We have had several folks with OCD here. Read some of Thinkalot's posts. She was resistant to seeing a doc at first, too but she did and she's doing great :) You owe it to yourself to get whatever medical attention you need.

Thanks for posting! I was reading some posts from Thinkalot here. There are many familiar to me things in her acting. This is why I got the idea to read more about OCD. I try to avoid shrinks and lawyers if I can. Here at LS is different. People share experience and their stories that I find helpful. To think that my mind is sick is scary. I am doing very successfully research. All I heard till now was that I have a brilliant mind, that I am gifted in technical sciences. The work I do is so important to me. No one complained or noticed something strange in my behavior yet. I just sometimes have obsessive ideas, I do things that I find not correct but still do it… …

Hey marribell,

I have OCD as well and I recommend talking to a professional even though I have yet to do that. But for me its more due to financial reasons. there are some good books that can give you really good insight into the disorder. One called Brain Lock teaches you some ways you can cope with the thought process. I guess it depends on teh severity of your case, If your life is severely interrupted, you might need professional help but if its very minor you might be able to get some sort of help from some books. But if you notice it getting worse you should prob go sooner rather than later. Go to http://www.ocfoundation.org for some good up to date information and just type OCD into google.

Mine comes and goes, like it does with most people with OCD. It got kinda bad last week but each time it comes back it doesnt seem to last as long, but it still did make me miserable. I will need to talk with someone soon, I jsut told my mom and she was supportive, so we'll see where it goes from here...

Good luck! send me a PM if you want to chat further. I felt funny about having something 'wrong' at first too...but what moi says is true! It's nothing to be ashamed of...I also am highly intelligent and have always achieved highly in my career and academically....there's just something with our brains that runs a bit differently to other people's. Everyone has issues. Good luck. :)

Thank you. Right now before wedding my worries are increased. When I look back I have had so many issues in past. I thought I am a freak time by time, that it happens to everyone. Here is something else strange too. I am freezing time by time when everyone else is hot. Is this a sign? Sometimes when I worry or I don't know why I cannot concentrate to count people in the room. I tried to talk with my mom. She says I am just worried because of wedding. I am sometimes so rude to her. I don't want it. Every time I swear to myself that I won't do it again but I cannot hold it. Sometimes I hurt my fiancee too. Two time in two years. It was just 30 minutes of hysterics and then I was sorry. He will laugh at me if I tell him that his soon to be wife has these fairs. I will just study all syndromes farther not telling anyone until I am sure I really suffer from it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here's my theory on the whole thing....if it's not one thing, it's gonna be another....Yep, I've got OCD...big deal...we are all bundles of chemicals and one tiny imbalance and bam, you've got a "label" of something. Why would your fiancee laugh at you? This worries me....you should be able to share EVERYTHING with him.....also, sometimes we have to be willing to help ourselves and seeking a competent professional is part of this sometimes...I think to say that all lawyers/psychologists should be avoided is somewhat ignorant....There's a time and a place for helping yourself...and bettering your life. I don't mean to sound harsh, just honest. I would definitely consider talking to someone about what you are going through. Your mom may not have the information regarding this kind of stuff to be as supportive as you would like.
