A few questions for my fellow non-believers: Religious people ignore this.

Recommended Posts

Oh, so you think "Do not murder" means "don't kill one, kill many!"? :lmao: Yes, I can see why that is logical to you.

People, we've had it all wrong all this time! God commands us to mass murder! Have a field day! :p:cool:

I can't I'm a pacifist. Think God will understand?

Last one...

Why did god not include any of the following in the ten commandments:

- No child rape/abuse

- No lying

- No stealing (it says "covet" which is a thought crime)

- No cheating

- No genocide (actually this is condoned in the bible)

- No mass murder (god commands Moses to set brother on brother, etc)

Just curious.

Hi S&R,

I'll actually take your genocide and raise you one suit of armour :D

Did you know that under the New Covenant we are called to a higher standard than the Old Covenant (10 commandments)?

For example,

The 10 commandments say "do not to commit adultery". Now, under that commandment you could lust for a another man's wife until sweat poured from every gland of your body...

Guess what? Jesus raised the bar...

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Whoa! Now, even looking with lust is the same as adultery. Why? God looks at the heart.

"The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

The 10 Commandments said, "Do not murder"

Christ said:

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgement.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgement;"

We can't even have hatred or anger in our heart. The apostle John said:

"Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him."

Christ continued in his sermon,

"You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?"

Tax collectors are referenced a lot in the bible. Basically the tax collectors were Jewish men that were appointed by the Romans to collect taxes from the Jews. The tax collectors would scheme the people and charge higher taxes, pay the Romans, and pocket the rest. The fact another Jew would use a pagan system to scheme their own people was considered the ultimate in treachery.

Christ often used tax collector reference to really drive the message home.

He used this reference too:

"You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles."

The Romans would often force the Jews to carry their armor for a mile, Jesus said carry it two. These are much higher standards than the Old Covenant. What was that about mass murder? Is it just the physical act your condemning? God goes one step further and says, what is in the heart. Using God's standards, have you or any of us committed mass murder in our hearts?

What goes on in the heart that causes us to commit outwardly evil acts?

That's what Christ was getting at; not the surface, physical act. But the underlying spiritual motivation. Sin. Which He came to deal with :)

And the list goes on! The 10 commandments only deal with the surface, physical manifestation of sin...Christ's commandments get to the heart of the matter. As God spoke:

The days are coming,” declares the Lord,

“when I will make a new covenant

with the people of Israel

and with the people of Judah.

It will not be like the covenant

I made with their ancestors

when I took them by the hand

to lead them out of Egypt,

because they broke my covenant,

though I was a husband to them,”

declares the Lord.

“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel

after that time,” declares the Lord.

“I will put my law in their minds

and write it on their hearts.

I will be their God,

and they will be my people.

No longer will they teach their neighbor,

or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’

because they will all know me,

from the least of them to the greatest,

declares the Lord.

“For I will forgive their wickedness

and will remember their sins no more.”

After Christ taught this new doctrine, it amazed the crowds:

"When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law."

So … I guess mocking is bad, even though it's not prohibited in the commandments?
