Loneliness: The Human Condition

Recommended Posts

I think loneliness is one of the worst feelings in the world.

I know it's part of the human condition; to realize that you really are honestly alone in this world. Or maybe I'm just being cynical. But I really feel like I have no friends. I have acquaintances, many of them in fact. But no one who I feel like would actually give a real f*ck.

I'm also at that age in my life (early 20's, aka college party years) where I SHOULD be having fun, and living my life, and partying, and getting drunk. But I don't even want to do that kind of stuff, and it seems like that's all many of the people I know want to do. Is something wrong with me? I think I was born in the wrong era, haha.

I guess my question is how do I get out of this funk? I need more real friends. It's Saturday night and I'm doing absolutely nothing :/ Feeling kind of pathetic. Anyone ever feel like they have no friends?..

I feel your exact pain. Right now I am just waiting to be able to move in the next month because right now I live with my parents and there is nothing left for me where I live. My only friends have moved away or are way too busy working and partying. I can't party and it sucks. I am stuck at home pretty much every day and the only time I get out is when I am doing things on my own. I feel like I have no friends at all. I mean I talk to people from time to time but it's like I don't really have a connection with anyone. I can't really tell anyone about my depression because no one seems to understand me or care. Inside I feel no true excitement or joy for anything anymore. I just feel like screaming sometimes but I know I can't. This just all drives me nuts. But I just want to let you know someone shares your pain....it helps me too =).

I am lonelier when facing opposition i have friends and family around me all the time its when they oppose me i feel lonely.I crave alone time and i take it

it centers me.I am never alone..... then when there is no one with me physically, god is with me and so is hope and prayers that those who give me grief and oppose me they will see the light..

i could travel the world alone....and not be lonely i will always find someone to talk to and when i dont i talk to the stars above and enjoy the peace and solitude...don't get me wrong, I would love someone to journey with.....but i have faith that if that happens I do find someone, it will be a partnership that lasts the rest of my time here..and if it isnt someone that i adore and adores me, i would rather be alone.......ill go to africa and get love from kids i feed....smilin....i have a large family so i am never alone anyway.i will fill my time however my heart tells me too...deb

Hi

This is the firsts time I'm attempting to actually give advice on this forum, so here goes. I didn't do a thing about it, now 5 years later I'm very much alone all the time, every night.

I was just like that in college. I knew a few people but wouldn't really class them as friends.

So I spent most of my time alone. Each new term I would walk around the society fairs with the aim of joining one, surely there must be one that would interest me and get me out there. But I never did, just slumped off home and gave up.

Now 5 years after leaving college I would give anything to go back there and just do something, anything to get out and meet people. Believe me from what I've found it doesn't get easier to deal with after college. In hindsight, college is full of opportunities.

Basically it's the same advice I've been given so many times here, get out and do anything to meet people, the longer you leave it, the harder it is. Shame I won't actually listen to that advice myself!

Not sure if that's helped!

For some reason I've never felt lonely, even when I've not had any friends.

I guess because of this, I don't 'really' know what loneliness feels like.

Sometimes I've even fantasized about being on a spaceship in deep space on my own, and living that way for the rest of my life.

just as much as humans are essentially alone, they are also essentially surrounded by life. You see every thing around you vibrates with life your body has more bacterial then human cells, what I'm trying to get at is that you can just walk into a coffee shop or onto the street and you'll see people even if you don't know them you're still connected to them. You're not alone even if you think you are

peace

oh and to help your situation I'd say you'd need to develop the audacity to find and surround yourself with good people. You can do it.

Have you ever seen that movie "Into The Wild"? It's about this guy and his journey "into the wild" basically. He leaves his normal life, all his cash, and goes on a journey to sort of find himself kind of thing. There's this scene near the end where this guy finally comes to a realize that true happiness doesn't existence unless shared.

I can almost guarantee that day dream of yours into space is something you may regret... :p

Your experiences did help! I think I honestly do just need to throw myself out there more. I do get that it probably gets harder to make real friends as you get older. Thank you for your advice :)

I always feel lonely. Like I'm missing my other half. All I want is one special person to be with, but it's almost impossible to find her, or make her want to be that person.

Today was the first salsa club meeting on campus and I had a blast. But when it was time to go home and saying bye to the last girl I danced with and I actually knew her from before, I just felt super lonely from then till I'm writing this now. I know I'm just not meant to be alone.

OP - I don't have any good advice. I feel your pain (you're NOT alone in this situation!), and hope you pass through this trial quickly. In my own life, I've gone through many difficult times, but they eventually all come to an end. I know you can't see the end right now, but one day you will find what you are looking for (that sounds cliche...but it's true!)

Loneliness makes happiness taste even sweeter. Life is a cycle. You can't be lonely forever. It might be constant but somewhere somehow something will pop out of nowhere that will make you smile. Just deal with it coz' it is a part of life... no matter how much it sucks!

It's pretty much the advice I was give in this thread:

I'd recommend you read that too!

This is exactly how I feel SD.

When I talk to someone and have a good time and seem to create a "connection" even for a short time it's amazing, even if it's just with someone online. But then when they have left or the interaction is over the comedown just intensifies the loneliness.

It's like getting a glimpse into the world of being with someone, then coming back into my own isolated world.

Yeah that's exactly it.

It's the taste of happiness and then losing it.

I've actually heard that it's a very good way of breaking somebody that has been taken prisoner.

Give them a little hope that they can escape and then take it away from then. Sure fire way to cause despair.
