Modern worship to the pagan scandinavian gods

Recommended Posts

I have met online a man who said that he believed in the scandinavian/german god Thor.

The man loves Germany and often travels to Germany. He is 49 and he likes german Gothic Metal music. He has a chain with symbol of the god on his chest. I have read about the religion on the internet and found out that they did human sacrifices in the past.

I do like the man but I am afraid to meet him for the first date because of all the stuff.

Does anyone know anything about modern worshiping to god Thor?

Is it dangerous to meet the guy?

Why would he worship to god Thor nowadays?

Almost every mythological god, from Thor to Zeus and all Roman/Greek gods, have their basis in some truth. What we are dealing with here, based on extrapolation from the Bible, are fallen angelic beings who at some point in the past masqueraded as gods. You will notice they all have a human appearance (as angels do). Additionally, many of these ancient gods had children with human women, called demigods. This is also mirrored in Genesis 6 where the fallen angels had offspring called Nephilim.

I think that a man my age who has some kind of wanna-be Viking thing going on is just about too silly for words.

Does it mean he worships to Satan/Evil?

Does it make the guy to be dangerous for dating and socially?

off the wall though it may seem, why not show some interest and ask him? if what he says makes sense, then carry on. If he comes across as one picnic short of a sandwich, and seems ever so slightly insane, tll him thanks but no thanks. And avoid him. if he gives you any trouble, call iron man, the hulk and captain america. they'll deal with him.

I work in LE...just be careful here. Many of the white supremacist prison gangs are knee deep into some of that stuff, so check his record and meet in a public place for sure.

No, it doesn't "mean" that. He doesn't worship "Satan," he already told you that it's Thor he worships.

He has things in common with white supremacists, and personally just the fact that he "worships Thor" would be enough to let me know that he's really not a guy I'd ever take seriously. To heck with the human sacrifices in the past; grown ups playing viking are lame. To me.

This is what I was going to recommend.

I know a lot of pagans who worship a wide variety of deities; from the Norse gods to the Greek and Roman to the Egyptian.

The best thing you can do is simply ask him to tell you about his belief system.

I am not a Christian and initially, my BF was concerned that about my belief structure. I explained my core philosophies and as they mostly align with his Lutheran beliefs, we have reached a happy medium.

It can't hurt to ask and he will mostly likely enjoy talking about it.

Honestly I can understand perfectly "digging" Thor and wearing a pendant of Thor. It's the "worship" part and the Germany thing, including the music taste that causes my concern about white supremacy. If you would have a problem with that, you might want to check it out with him as well as the worship of Thor question.

What if they still very aggressive and into human sacrifices?

I have read online that the religious vikings typically made multiple human sacrifices. Also, when a husband died, they put in his grave his alive wife or his daughter to die with him.

What if he gets angry with his woman for something?

Freedom of religion does not go that far. If the authorities knew what was happening they will step in to save the victims. Or at least to prevent the Thor worshiper from getting a second and third wife to sacrifice to Thor

I went to Viking festival in Trondheim years back, had a brilliant time. Good music, good people, good beer, take a few warrior tests, goof around in a re-encted battle or two. It's great fun.

I have a couple of friends who do it every year. They take it serious too, study viking history, build longships, carve intricate head figures, make jewellery and ship the whole lot over every year. Granted, it look silly when they practise their sword fights and rituals over here, but it looks great when they put on the show. Both in their 50's now, ones a dance choreographer and the other an accountant. Nothing sinister or dangerous about them at all. They don't actually worship Odin, Thor, Loki, Freya or any of the Gods, though. They're just very much into Vikings and their history.

Tres, any chance this fella could be like my two friends?

See, now THIS sounds like alot of fun. Totally different set-up from guy nearing 50 and worshipping Thor and listening to Gothic Metal.

I think I'd enjoy swinging a broad-axe around. And pillaging a village or two.

Right here is the first problem IMO. A person can say anything they want to online. I personally don't think it's safe....

I would give a wide berth to the thor worshipper....he may make you dress up as helga and have wild thor sex.......while swinging from your plaits.....

i would give a wide berth to that guy for the simple fact he may go hannibal lector on you and serve you up to his friends with a fine wine or a german boutique beer they would all be wearing thor costumes and the girls would alll have really long plaits that trailed in the suspect colored borscht while they slurped on it......skip that dinner party go to sizzler instead ...i have an image of that dinner party...yep go to sizzler...stick to the salad......deb

We have a Medieval carnival similar to this each year. Great fun!

For some reason the OP's man seems a little sinister.

All depends if he just a Viking fan (and goth metal is part of the modern scene of that) or is actually into Heathenry or similar. Even if he is, it doesn't immedaitely make him a bad man but some Neo's are also into that kind of thing. Asatru, I think they call themselves, not sure.

If it's true, as I've suggested based on Biblical extrapolation, that ancient "gods" such as Thor, Zeus, etc, were actually fallen angelic beings masquerading as "gods", then we can also assume that they were all under the direction of Satan, and therefore to worship one of these "gods" is to indirectly worship Satan. Why? Because Satan's ultimate goal is to pull men and women away from worshipping the true God.

Thank you to everybody!

I guess I want to meet the guy for a cup of coffee.

He seems to be attractive, fit, intelligent and we have some interests in common.

I've had a long fascination with Vikings, as I have a lot of Norwegian blood---so the mythology always struck a chord with me.

Regarding battle re-enactments, they're a blast!!! And frankly, the one I went to years ago, was filled with intelligent, & creative people enjoying themselves.

Gorilla Theater--I believe you're in the Texas area--if you'd like to witness a full-scale battle (hundreds of guys on a battlefield)*and a few women, too...*

-----The Society for Creative Anachronisms has a a full-scale re-enactment in the Estrella Mountains, in Florence, Arizona--and the public can come to watch.

The sound created by that many swords meeting at once is something else.....

To the OP--it's just a different religion--I wouldn't be too quick to presume he's into human sacrifice.......

I doubt he's a Norse fundamentalist, he probably just enjoys the mythology.

Do you know that there is no text more barbaric than the Old Testament of the Bible--books like Deuteronomy and Leviticus and Exodus. God kills the firstborn of all the Egyptain sons, women are stoned, raped (they say to "lie down with her")etc.. But modern Christians generally don't act like that and modern Norse followers probably don't either.

There is also no Satan outside of Christianity. In Norse mythology Hela is the ruler of the underworld "Hel". The demigod is Thor who like in many other mythologies has a god father and Earth mother. In Christianity it's Jesus, in Greek it's Hercules.

Some people would say why would anyone worship any ancient mythology?

The OP was concerned with whether the Thor thing might be a dating issue - not with whether the guy was suffering from demonic possession.

Since the OP has not even told us whether or not she believes in angels and demons, much less whether they are a dating concern, don't you think that this discussion should be happening someplace else?
