I did a search in this section, didn't find any threads on this, so I thought I'd start one. I think that positive quotes and ideas really help with perspective and mood. I manage depression and this is one of my tools to start my day off in a positive way. Please join in if you want

This quote made a lot of sense for me today because I'm sometimes way too black and white in my thinking. I see my life going a certain way and if something unforeseeable happens, I get easily derailed. But I always have a choice to either accept and embrace the new changes with positivity or to let them push me down.

Kipling has many great quotes, I like this one

I came across this piece of writing in college, and it had a profoundly eye-opening effect on me........(still does)

 

The Guy in the Glass

When you get what you want in your struggle for pelf,

And the world makes you King for a day,

Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,

And see what that guy has to say.

 

For it isn't your Father, or Mother, or Wife,

Who judgement upon you must pass.

The feller whose verdict counts most in your life

Is the guy staring back from the glass.

 

He's the feller to please, never mind all the rest,

For he's with you clear up to the end,

And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test

If the guy in the glass is your friend.

 

You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum,

And think you're a wonderful guy,

But the man in the glass says you're only a bum

If you can't look him straight in the eye.

 

You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,

And get pats on the back as you pass,

But your final reward will be heartaches and tears

These posts are very inspiring. Actually shed a few tears when reading the poems, they ring so true in my life these days.

 

I had a thought the other day, and I know it was from something I read. That my goal these days is to go to bed feeling proud of the person I am and how I just spent my day.

 

If I don't feel proud, then I know I have work to do tomorrow to make sure I feel that self-pride. This makes me think of my values and beliefs, encourages me to give more.

 

Another thing I've realized lately is that I'm never happy for today, I'm always thinking things like "when this happens" or "when I meet someone", in relation to my happiness. I have to remind myself that we just never know how long we have in life, so we must take full advantage of every moment and not live only for the future. Of course, my favourite quote is from Horace's Ode:

 

"Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero"

("Seize the day, trusting as little as possible in the future")

I haven't heard from New Guy in a few days, and I nearly fell into the trap of feeling down and sad...i.e. pity party that he hasn't emailed me!

 

But my happiness does depend on me, so I choose to go about life as I normally do. I hope he does email, but if he doesn't, life goes on!

I was writing a poem the other day, but got lost on the ending...I promised Mercy I would post it but alas, writer's block... but I would love to share one I wrote this time last year when I went apple picking, I went late, maybe a little too close to sundown...but it got my imagination going. This thread is about positivity, I think that creative writing is very positive, I would LOVE to read your poems and creativity... Please share!

 

The Apple Orchard

In the orchard late at night,

The air is cool, the stars are bright,

The wind is still but whispers stir,

A monster lurks, of that I’m sure.

 

I scan the rows of apple trees,

One by one, then twos and threes,

My footsteps snap the frozen grass,

I’ve reached the edge, the dark impasse.

 

Shivering from cold and fright,

My breath is taken by the night,

A lonely apple hangs up high,

A creak, a hush, a laboured sigh.

 

I peer into the hollow blue,

I see it, grand with limbs askew,

Its eyes peer back, it smiles, it grins,

Its prickly coat as sharp as pins.

 

Its evil voice revives my fear,

Its nasty smile grins ear to ear,

Its fiery eyes seem to ignite,

I cower at its fiendish sight.

 

“In this orchard you will stay,

And join the rest who came this way.”

It points to rows of lifeless trees,

Imploring branches, silent pleas.

 

I run, I run, I cannot flee,

The hellion catches up to me,

Crash and scratch, its cry of glee,

The last I see, the apple tree.

I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself.
