dmmm
Hi I've been trying to think a lot more positive lately and most of the time it's worked. However when I wake up I literally feel so helpless and that nothing is going to work out. I just want to pull the covers over my head and hide. I usually do this, sometimes for hours, not getting up, ignoring my phone just hiding. Takes me till mid afternoon to get out of this "funk". Anyone have any tips on how to work on this? Or would it be something I should see a doctor about?

Or would it be something I should see a doctor about? I have days like that. Some days I'm more grateful than others that I have a dog that needs to be walked and fed, otherwise I would tend to stay in bed. I do have depression though. There is no harm in seeing a doctor, but I'd say don't assume it's depression and that you need meds. It could be so many things, even dietary. Maybe add some Omega oils and B-vitamins daily, those help improve mood. Exercise every day too helps with the mood. I do all those things to manage depression without pharmas. And even if you don't have depression, they should help overall.
Author dmmm
Thanks River Do you think exercising right away in the morning would benefit? That's supposing I can actually make it out of bed to the treadmill.
River Rain
Thanks River Do you think exercising right away in the morning would benefit? That's supposing I can actually make it out of bed to the treadmill. Yes, first thing. It gets your metabolism going, releases endorphins and is a great start to the day. But yeah, you have to really force yourself to get up and do it. I have a spinning bike at home and I set my alarm for 6am every day. I put the alarm clock on the most annoying setting into the living room and really loud so that it forces me out of bed. I have my workout clothes all ready so I have more of a chance to get the workout done. So far, it works 99% of the time! A morning walk outside is awesome too, before the world gets up. mercy
Try this exercise when you first wake before you move from the bed. Take a deep breathe, on the in breath say, love, on the out breath say, life. Do ten times. Don't count, just say it with deep breathing, enough. Then think to yourself, I'm living an intentional life and for today these are my intentions - name them. Then smile and thank this beautiful day for it is a gift. Have you ever tried yoga? It's great for the morning.
Silly_Girl
I remember this so well. It's all-encompassing. I could even 'be normal' to get my son up and ready for school, and the second he left be back in place I felt safest. If you can somehow set a goal that leaves you needing to leave the house early I honestly think that's s huge step towards having a very different kind of day. I recall a little strategy I used on myself where I would pause the television whilst watching something I enjoyed, then go to bed, and in the morning it would often be motivation to grab a coffee and get to the living room rather than stay in bed. It's a real tough one. Is there anything you think would motivate you to get up and out?

This totally worked for me when I fell back into depression last month. I scheduled something for 5 days straight at 8am, it got me into the habit of waking up early, and it helped me keep that habit.
Author dmmm
Hi everyone Thanks for the replies. It's good to know I'm not the only one who gets this. Silly Girl I think you are right, having to leave the house early definitely helps, or at least helps you get out of bed. River I'm gonna try to go straight from bed to the treadmill. I also bought some 5HTP pills today. Apparently they do wonders for the blues. Anyone else tried them?

Yes, they worked very well for my mood. I just have trouble swallowing pills or I'd still be taking them.

Did you take them before bed? It's only afternoon here in UK, I'm eager to get started with them but don't want to be falling asleep!

I used to take them in the evenings because a side effect is that they could make you drowsy, but I never found them to make me sleepy at all, though generally speaking, my sleep was a lot better too. Maybe to be safer, wait until after dinner? Or just be prepared to take a nap!

KathyM
Sounds to me like you have depression. You should see a counselor about that, and he will teach you strategies on how to combat negative thinking.
Author dmmm
Well I tried the 5HTP last night, 50mg. Didn't really notice it making me feel tired, actually the opposite. I did feel a small wave of happiness I suppose sweep over me. I woke up today at 7AM feeling very refreshed. If I'd wanted to I could have got up, however being lazy I just stayed in bed longer. Still got the feeling of helplessness, although not quite as bad. I do feel a little better already I suppose. Not sure if it will take time to build up in my body. There's not really any recommended daily dose so might try taking 2 per day.

The health food store near me is owned by a really knowledgeable woman who has her certification in natural and homeopathic healing. She's advised me on so many things, her services are priceless. You don't want to take too much if you don't need it right? I'm so glad you already feel the affects! That's what happened to me too, it was less than 24 hours and I felt really great. But yeah, we have habits to break along the way too, like forcing yourself out of that bed!
