fortyninethousand322
I got my hair cut yesterday and was recommended a product for my thinning hair. It's expensive (40 dollars) but if it works I'd obviously use it. It's a three part product called "nioxin". Anyone ever use this stuff or any product designed for those with thinning hair? Any suggestions?
Crusoe
Snake oil, forget it. The only thing that really works is propecia. Edited November 8, 2012 by Crusoe
amaysngrace
I bought some rogaine for women when my daughter totally over-tweezed her eyebrows and wanted to grow them back in a hurry and it worked pretty well. It has that ingredient you named.
Lobouspo
For a one two punch try rogaine and see if you can find a doctor who will prescribe you Avodart off label. If not Avodart, go with the propecia, but Avodart inhibits more DHT production and thus, is more potent....
Andy_K
Snake oil, forget it. The only thing that really works is propecia. This ^^ Propecia will stop hair loss for most guys, but chances are you will see no or little regrowth of already lost hair. The active ingredient in propecia is finasteride. You can also save a lot of money by purchasing generic finasteride pills instead of taking brand name stuff, and by purchasing 5mg pills and splitting them instead of taking 1mg pills. sweetkiwi
i'm a hair stylist and nioxin is only for people without a real hair loss issue. For people who want to see instant results but not lasting ones. I would not buy it myself. Propecia can affect erections and sex drive. My ex is 29 and tried it. His hair got thicker but he noticed his sex drive completely vanished. So he went down to half a pill and his sex drive came back. I'm wondering if this is an actual issue for you or if you're worried about something completely normal such as losing hair. Hair has three phases. Growing, resting, and falling out. The resting phase is the longest but any given day a normal person loses between 100 to 300 hairs. And if your hair is long and dark for instance, you will notice more than someone with short blonde hair.

Any suggestions? Like kiwi said, it isn't for serious hair loss but it will help prevent additional loss. I've been using the stuff for about 15 years and it definitely slowed the rate of loss. I still have a fairly good head of hair whereas by now my father was almost completely bald! When I first bought some it came with a cover for the shower drain that was intended to capture hair that comes out while showing. The before and after results were impressive. After starting regular use there was almost no hair in the trap after showing. Oh yes, that niacin treatment [part three] will give you a head buzz! Woohoo!!! FitChick
Try Propecia, Rogaine aka Minoxidil (CVS or Rite Aid have sales) and Viviscal pills which you can buy cheaper from Amazon.com. I've been using minoxidil on my eyebrows and it works.
bindy
I have not experienced about this product but one of my friends got the real benefit by using this oil. It’s called “Ever martin hair solution”. Other that without using any particular branded products just apply little bit hot olive oil mix with vitamin E 2 capsules twice week. But you have to massage your scalp at least 15 minutes. This is really helpful for hair loss.
Madman81
Any suggestions? Yeah. A hair trimmer. My hair was thinning a lot; just about three years ago I bought a trimmer, took it all off, and grew a goatee. The usual response I got from people was "you look badass." It was psychologically useful too. Before I buzzed my head, I was basically resigned to hair loss, letting it happen. By taking it all off, it's a conscious decision that I control completely. "Oh, you want to lose some hair, do you, head? Fyck you, I'm in charge here. I'm taking it ALL off."
Feelin Frisky
Different people get differing results. I started to lose my hair at 30-31 just as I had lost a ton of weight and built a nice body. I felt cursed. I started to notice hair in the tub in large volumes (after g/f of 5 years moved out). For a moment I wondered "who the hell is leaving hair in my tub?"--a remnant thought from my childhood where I grew up in a household of ten people with one bathroom. But then I realized it was me. I tried natural oils, then Rogaine and I found it did absolutely nothing. Propecia did nothing either for me. But after the initial period of hair loss, my hair bounced back and has been going through periods of loss and rebound which I think is OK for my age. Many dudes really lose it and I am lucky enough to have my problem mostly in the back so when I look in the mirror, I don't see baldy. One thing I think that triggers loss is use of hair color. I had been using "Just for Men" to stay away from Mr. Gray. But it seems a month or so after, my scalp gets dry and clumpy. Life is a bitch and then you die. Whatya gonna do? Propecia/finasteride, is probably the best product out there for hair loss, blocks DHT, but sometimes guys are not as lucky like SK's bf. They never get their libido or erections restored properly and also suffer anxiety and brain fog to boot for years. There are class action lawsuits going on now with Merck. Read up before you take it and decide if the you want to take a chance.

As for Propecia, I mean, if it works and if losing my sex drive is the only negative side effect I'd be interested in trying that. I'm not sexually active and honestly I don't believe I ever will be, nor do I have a sex drive right now to boot. So losing my sex drive, even permanently is not something I care all that greatly about. But I'll look into the stuff on here. Thanks everyone for your input.

ascendotum
Almond and olive oil are the best products for the prevention of hair loss. Hmm have not read of these oils being talked about by the bald community. One oil I use every so often is Emu Oil. Its not cheap but it strengthens the hair and stops the loss for me, not that I have it so bad anymore.
trevzilla
Sadly it's mostly bunk. Yeah propecia works, but only on the crown and not the front of your head also there is a chance it will destroy your sex drive. Edited January 5, 2013 by trevzilla
