Forever Learning
My 8 year old son (3rd grade) has been having a tough time with spelling. He is a bright kid, but what happened is, in Kindergarten through 2nd grade, the teachers encouraged the kids to spell the word how it sounded. They didn't put a great emphasis on the actual spelling, until now. It's odd. Anyhow, now it's time to spell the word correctly, and he has already fallen into the habit of writing it how he thinks it should be spelled! (that might be called "Ebonics", come to think of it). He wasn't responding all that well to my spelling practice with him, he found it boring. But, he loves video games (of course) and computer games. So I found this website, which teaches spelling, and it is really doing fantastic things for him with his spelling, so I wanted to share it with everyone. It's called: spellingcity, you will have to google it to get the url. His teacher's website listed it, as have some other teachers. It's free, although you can buy an upgraded membership (the free version is enough for us for now). Teachers can also use it for free to put the weekly spelling word list for all the students to access, and play games and practice spelling, even get tested on the spelling. Parents can create their own spelling lists as well. Right there on the home page, there are three (3) spots to start typing words. If you start putting words in these blanks, once you put 3 words, the fourth blank appears, and so on, you can type quite a long list. Then you press the button "Test Me" or "Games" or "Practice" and a lady's voice will read the words out loud and put them into a sentence (practice/testing) or the game that my son likes is the one where the mouse tries to steal cheese from a sleeping cat (forgot the name, will get back to you with the exact game name on that, but it's in the free game section). I hope this website helps anyone else whose child is struggling with spelling. Cheers! Author Forever Learning
Oh, I should mention I am not in any way affiliated with 'SpellingCity'. I just think it's good stuff for elementary school kids. And it's free which is spectacular as well. There is another great website called 'IXL'. It's math topics and super as well, and has some free features.
Author Forever Learning
I should add that if you know of any good educational websites for kids, I would LOVE to know! Apparently listing the URL is not allowed, but if you list the name of the site, I can google it. Thanks!
