KathyM
I don't think any scientist worth is weight in salt would dispute the age of the earth. Creationists don't count as scientists. A lot of those scientists also accept the age of the earth, and evolution too. Many of the best minds in science are theists. I'm not disputing the age of the earth that some scientists proclaim it to be, I'm just saying I don't believe we can know that with any accuracy at this point. So regardless of how old the earth is thought to be, it doesn't disprove the existence of God.
OpenBook
I'd like to know who came up with the 6,000 years. I don't know anywhere in the Bible that states this.
Author Sun Devil
There are some religious zealots that believe that the world is only 600 years old. These people are brainwashed and ignore simple logic. I know alot of engineers and scientists, and although some believe in god, I never met any that allows religion to control them. They rely on science first, faith second. Science has accomplished alot more to humanity than religion has
JamesM
But the age of the earth or the many other arguments have nothing to do with your rejection of God, do they? You have decided there is no god because you feel he has not answered your prayer, right? You assume that the answer must be yes if there is a god, yes? Why cannot the answer be no? Or even more likely, the answer could be...yes, but not yet. By the logic you have used, if tomorrow a woman entered your life and became your girlfriend, then you would believe in the existence of God.
TheFinalWord
In Christianity, it goes back as far as the early churches, and it's based on Old Testament geneologies. It's been through a few declines and revivals. It's only recently as scientific knowledge has really started threatening fundamentalist and literalist beliefs that it's picked up again. Of course the best scientific proof that Usher's calculations are wrong is that Methos from Highlander is now well over 6,000 years old. Eclypse
Err.. back on topic. Sun Devil I agree with the others this is a pretty weak reason to leave God. Doesn't the old saying go "God helps those who help themselves." What have you done to help yourself? Whether you believe the earth is 6,000 or 6 billion years old, moping and feeling sorry for oneself without taking action never helped anyone.

Doesn't the old saying go "God helps those who help themselves." ...and perhaps God HAS been sending women your way, but you haven't responded appropriately. Maybe the one who you decided wasn't pretty enough to even approach is the one God thought was perfect for you. Or maybe the one who dissed you at first will respond to you if you persistently keep after her. What you want IMO is God to make it easy for you. But even the most faithful adherents to God will say that God doesn't work that way.

AlexDP
I am done with religion for good. I had mentioned in a previous post that I had prayed for a girlfriend in my life for the past 10 years. In that time, all I have gotten is false hope and watching all of my friends get girls. I have decided to abandon god and religion. I cannot imagine a loving god that would do this to someone. If there is a god, he is by far the worst monster in existance. No one can prove that he is loving. It is more realistic that he is notihng but a scam created by con artists who wanted to gain money or power. I decided to never pray again This has Faust written all over it. Anyone want Sun Devil's soul? Edited December 11, 2012 by AlexDP
TheFinalWord
What did any woman do that was so bad to cause god to fling them at Sun Devil? My mom used to ask that about me in my youth...she's guaranteed I'll receive retribution when I have my own kids someday
