Gotta new job & a mean scary boss :(

Recommended Posts

Um..got a call on wednesday from some man working at a small firm in the queens area so we had a phone interview & he hired me after the call. I was so so happy & he wanted me to start work the next day so I did & he told me to come into his office & he sat me down & looked at me for a while before he started telling what he expects of me in the job u know. So he puts me on a conference call & monitors me the whole time & every time I made a little mistake he pressed the hold button & started yelling at me :(. I gotta go in tomorrow for a evening shift from 1-9pm & he said he gonna stay there with me all the way til closing so he keep an eye on me. Should I be scared? Did I make a mistake in taking this job so fast?

This kind of reminds me of my boss. My boss is more annoying than anything. I mean he can be a micromanaging d-bag, but your boss sounds worse. I would quit if I were you. Unfortunately at small businesses where there is limited resources as far as HR, your boss can ultimately do whatever he wants. I know from experience. You can fight it and risk him firing you or quit. No one should have to work under such conditions. I would start by being frank with him and saying that you are still new and doing the best you can to learn as quickly as possible and to give you a chance to do so. I know it's hard to do, but sometimes during an interview, it's a good chance to interview that employer while they are interviewing you. Ask as much questions about the company as possible in the future, including what is expected from the position, what happened to the last employee who held the position and so on. This way you can try to gauge their business practices.

You accepted a job over the phone, before even going in and checking out the place or meeting the guy in person? Strange.

I was so so happy & he wanted me to start work the next day so I did & he told me to come into his office & he sat me down & looked at me for a while before he started telling what he expects of me in the job u know.

You didn't ask him what was expected of you prior to accepting the job? Again, strange.

So he puts me on a conference call & monitors me the whole time & every time I made a little mistake he pressed the hold button & started yelling at me .

What kind of job is this? It sounds like he is training you to handle these calls on your own. Making a "little" mistake is generally not looked highly upon at work. How else can he see how you handle these calls without listening in and critiquing you along the way?

I gotta go in tomorrow for a evening shift from 1-9pm & he said he gonna stay there with me all the way til closing so he keep an eye on me.

Did you expect to be left completely on your own on your second day at work?

Should I be scared?

You should grow up. Welcome to the real world, where your boss doesn't have to coddle you and be nice. You are being paid to perform some tasks -- he is teaching you how to do them. Some people don't have great "bedside manner" when it comes to criticism and critique. Maybe this guy is one of those. You should listen to what he has to say and not take it personally.

Did I make a mistake in taking this job so fast?

So I take it you gave up on the other job that required you to get a driver's license?

Oh wow, I actually didn't realize until now that this is the same OP who posted about needing a driver's license. I'm assuming this is the same job?

He wants me to get a driver's license yep but said its not a rush since he has 2 other guys driving to other sites. He pulled me to side today after he yelled again & I jumped in fear then he laughed & told me that he's doing this for my own good & that he likes me & thinks I'm a very nice person so I feel kinda better now but he still said he gonna bust up my chops 'cause that's the best thing for me to become really really good. Um...he also was nice enough to buy me lunch so I guess he not that bad :o.

I think he's trying to get you to build a backbone so to speak. Turn you into a warrior for the company who handles the front line. If you like the position, then try to keep going with it. If not, then keep looking for another job while you have this current position. Keep in mind that a boss isn't a friend, they have a job to do and so do you.

He's investing in you might be a good thing. I'd give the job a chance. If you don't like it start looking for another one. Much better to find a job when you have a job. DON'T JUST QUIT
