FitChick
Interesting article on how some of us are fatter or thinner than we were using the old BMI calculator. I don't bother with BMI whether old or new version. The tape measure is all I need.
amaysngrace
How come clothes keep getting bigger? I don't understand that. Medium is the new large and small is the new medium. I hate picking up jammies or sweats thinking they'll fit and then they're way too big. If anything they should make the clothes smaller so people will think they're getting fatter, not thinner.
KraftDinner
I'm 5'7" so I guess it hasn't changed for me? Is there a link to the new BMI calculator somewhere?
PogoStick
BMI is fine when used as intended, as a quick screening tool for the general public. Most people with common sense know the same just by looking in the mirror.

Called 'vanity sizing'. It's because people have a hard time to deal with the fact that they are significantly overweight so they get lied to by retailers.

Yeah, that sort of stuff makes it really hard for me to buy clothes. Then again, it's always hard for me to buy clothes. I'm a skinny guy then I do two deadlifts and bam I've got glutes the size of friggin' Australia.

JamesM
I always thought the BMI scale was ridiculous and unreasonable...until I decided to really focus on losing weight. I always thought that the weight that I should be at according to that scale was too low until I reached it and realized that it wasn't. I always though that the BMI in the middle for my height was okay for younger guys until I am now there. I now don't think the BMI scale is unreasonable at all. I believe it is what everyone should follow and not ignore. The reason most of us find it unreasonable and unnecessary is that we aren't there and want to deny what we know deep inside. I have heard how the clothing sizes are changing. It makes people feel better emotionally, but it increases the likelihood that they won't feel better physically. If we all faced facts and lost weight to fit into our correct BMI category, then we would no longer be an obese nation.
sweetkiwi
Guess that's official. I am almost obese!!!
tman666
Even if I was 0 percent bodyfat (and therefore, dead), I would be considered "overweight". BMI can kiss my squatting/deadlifting ass.

suladas
It is horrible, there is no possible way I could get into normal weight range, i'd be so skinny it's not even funny. I just dropped from obese to overweight according to it though. Clothes are so annoying, being tall I have to buy clothes a few sizes to big so they fit my arms and length and then they are massive in the stomach, and I do have a bit of a gut, it's going to be insane when it's gone I don't know how I will buy clothes then. Like I bought a work jacket a while ago, a XL tall was baggy in the stomach, but too small in the arms, shoulders, and length. I had to buy a XXXL tall to get one big enough in other places it's so annoying and fits like crap.
Casablanca
BMI is so useless....I'm over weight according to BMI...I'm 6'1 and weight 205...sure I have some fat, but if you look at me, you wouldn't think that I was unfit or unhealthy. BMI doesn't count for muscle, which is a big issue in why it isn't a great measure
Author FitChick
BMI is so useless....I'm over weight according to BMI...I'm 6'1 and weight 205... Not according to either the new or old BMI. Relax!
tbf
Still healthy within both formulas. But what this article fails to provide is how a mathematician corroborated his assumptions. I can say that x, y, z are all good and a, b, c are all bad and come up with a formula to recalculate the old theory that a, b, c are good and x, y, z are bad. This doesn't mean that it's based on any factual information with proper controls and sample sizes in place. Perhaps someone can provide his original study, if one even exists.
