shoesies05
So i posted another thread in here about some medical issues I've been having that really amount of chronic illness for the past few months with me being sick more often than not with flu like symptoms and respiratory issues. Thing is that I have become a lot less active in this time because i usually am wiped out after even just a couple hours of doing things. Yet, I feel like I am starting to gain weight because I haven't been riding my bike or been as physically active and I don't like feeling like I'm getting soft. Do you think I should just start working out even though I am sick all the time? I mean... right now I am sick but it's kind of like the feeling of a cold going away but one that drains all my energy. Whatcha think? I want to lose 10lbs minumum and I am not willing to do diet pills or lose based on diet alone... Thanks!
seren
Shoesies, I would get blood work done to rule out any Thyroid or autoimmune type illnesses first. Not saying you have these, but fatigue (as opposed to being tired) can be a symptom that not all is as it should be with your health and once diagnosed can be treated. I also think that as you have/ are ill, then expecting your body to work as it used to before getting it well may be impossible. Maybe taking up swimming or an aqua aerobics course will help gently bring you into exercise, rather than going at it hell for leather and making fatigue worse. I used to run, play squash and was uber fit, then an autoimmune disease had me wiped out, now I am taking small steps back into the world of exercise, small goals that I can achieve, build up then increase gradually as my body gets used to working again. Don't give up, it is harder to begin than it is to take it easier. I started walking for just 10 minutes and have built up to 30 minutes, it hurts, but it is better than sitting and not trying. Get to a doctor and find out what is making you feel ill, healthy diet, gentle stretching, possibly Pilates or Yoga to prepare for getting fitter.
Eternal Sunshine
It really depends on severity of your health issues. Ask your doctor. Don't just push yourself to exercise if you are not feeling well.
FitChick
Walking outside is great exercise and you get fresh air and sunshine and feel better. Do you take any vitamins? That will make a big difference. Also eat nutritionally dense foods like salmon, spinach, walnuts, berries. Google them.
monicaelise
Definitely follow up and ask your doctor as the others have said, but there's no reason why you can't start with just walking as FitChick has suggested. This was the very first thing I was given clearance to do after surgery. Even with a torso covered in bandages and surgical drains hanging out of my chest I could walk a couple miles a day. I'd start with a short distance, see how you feel and sit down to rest as you feel the need, and then add to that as you feel better. Doing too much too soon will just land you in bed. TigerCub
Do you smoke OP? I know when I smoked and I have asthma - when I'd get respiratory type problems, they would stick around for a long time and I always felt drained. That may not be the case for you - but if you do smoke, quitting should be 1 of the first things to try/work on. As for exercises. I agree, walking is a good and easy one. I also Hula Hoop - that's a fun exercise Good luck!
Author shoesies05
Thank you all for responding I have gotten blood work done and so far everything seems normal but we are still seeking answers. I do not smoke, but I used to be a smoker and I almost 6 months without a puff now. N.O.P.E. (Not One Puff Ever) although I did have a puff recently and it was DISGUSTiING to me ha... which feels good I have to admit. I'm feeling almost back to normal again today to I decided to ride my bike to school and back and while my legs were worn out- i feel like the positive psychological benefits were definitely worth it. I am hoping that I don't get sick again. I have seen doc's but they all said they thought it was just virus before- and then after that i had blood work done and no odd results turned up but the search will continue with my docs who I do have a lot of faith in as they helped me diagnose and relive my pain from endometriosis that I had felt since I was about 16. I used to have Mirena- and it was amazing! Except I had vaginal pain associated with it so I eventually had it removed... otherwise I would have it the rest of my life because I had practically no other side effects that were negative! i wish i could still have it minus the pain; i really hate taking the pill every day and used to get the shot and had terrible side effects with that ( I mean- crying over commercials on a regular basis because of how "touching" they were LMAO... among other things) Thank you for the suggestion though! I suggest it to everyone cuz it was that awesome (so long as the strings were cut short hah) I think I am just going to try and live my life as normally as possible. If I get sick along the way at least I can say I tried to live a normal life while I was hoping I could.
Author shoesies05
Seren: What blood tests can I get done for an autoimmune disease other that HIV? Two of my aunts have lupus and that is one things I've been wondering if I have VERY recently.
Emilia
Two of my aunts have lupus and that is one things I've been wondering if I have VERY recently. Do you have issues with your joints? When you have Lupus it means your immune system attacks the body itself and one of the manifestations is swollen joints. Sound like you need a combination of portion control, healthy diet (lots of veggie, some protein and some carbs) and initially light exercise to get you off the couch. Emilia
I have lupus and exercise really helps me. I do alot of yoga, tai chi and dance though I love yoga, go as often as I can. It's one of the best things you can do for your body
