being told you're 'silly'

Recommended Posts

i have my reservations about this. because it all depends on context. but then i think how many people actually say to somebody else 'you're silly'

nobody uses that. so in my eyes that's a show of attraction/affection

anybody agree?

I typically have always used it in an affectionate way

that was exactly how i took it which is why when she said it. i just sorta smiled and nodded to myself as a hell yeah.. not to mention when she said it she was smiling. of course she was also driving so there was no eye contact. but she was ear to ear.

just thinking of the word 'silly' and using it in a normal manner just doesn't seem right you either say somebody is silly in a negative way or a positive way. there's no other way to say somebody is being silly.

and personally i doubt any men actually use that word. to me the male version of 'silly'. is 'cute'.

Definition of SILLY

1

archaic : helpless, weak

2

a : rustic, plain

b obsolete : lowly in station : humble

3

a : weak in intellect : foolish

b : exhibiting or indicative of a lack of common sense or sound judgment <a very silly mistake>

c : trifling, frivolous

4

: being stunned or dazed <scared silly> <knocked me silly>

Doesn't exactly sound like a compliment to me.

It is a bit of a cute flirting innuendo. I wouldn't say it is 100% of the time, but more times then not yes.

Ear to ear though? It's rather hard to talk ear to ear.

lol

using an actual definition in context with verbal communication in a non official capacity is pretty literal and fail in my point of view.

if everything everybody said was taken for its literal meaning out of a websters dictionary nobody would get anywhere.

my ex girlfriend of 3 years had a nickname for me 'squishy' had nothing to do with my weight. she just thought it was cute that and something about penguins. but in the definition squishy is not a compliment. AT ALL. only reason we broke us was she moved to new york.

I could think of a few choice names to call you, just in fun, right..... I was married to someone like that.

When in doubt, stick to the literal meaning. In my neck of the woods, it'll keep you out of a muddy ditch.

Between close friends, ribbing each other, different story. We're usually a lot more harsh than that. We've also saved each other's lives before too. Big difference. There's a bond.

Ah, the involuntary flirt and/or blush smile. A prize indeed.

yes i understand where you're coming from. which is why i have my reservations about the use of the word 'silly'

i also have my reservations on the use of the word 'cute'

but CONTEXT is the key difference in what everybody says.

if i said you were a pain in the ass and i didn't want to see you again. but i couldn't hold back a smile or a little chuckle. the context would be different as opposed to me being agressive and combative.

words hold little meaning in verbal communication. its all about context. so while you have many creative things you wish to call me. how you say them. is really what matters.

this same principle can be used in when a female agrees to go out on a date with you. how did she agree? what was the CONTEXT? was she over joyed. did she just say cool let me know.

guys who get flaked on failed to see the context. which i think is totally escaping you at this point.

the word 'silly' is not a word that's used regularly. in fact i may have only heard the word used on me in my 30 years of living probably about 4 times. but that's a pretty arbitrary number. what i'm really saying is.. i rarely get a woman whom i'm attracted to use the word silly. BUT when it has been said its been in my favor.

i was merely polling the forum on what their thoughts where to reassure my own thought on the matter.

exactly. they say something that probably slipped out of their mouth. and they react with a blush/smile combo.

best thing in my experience to do in those situations is not say anything.

i kinda wanna add that in our conversation after the whole 'silly' thing i dunno how it came up but she showed me her belly ring.

in my somewhat knowledgable opinion. any girl lifting her shirt for ANY reason especially when you sorta know them but kinda don't. to show you anything. is pretty much a green light to pursue with due diligence.

It depends on the person. From a sweet natured individual I would perceive it as flirtation or friendliness. From somebody more prone to sarcasm and cynicism I would think it was condescending or an invitation to enter into conflict (playful or spiteful, depending again on their disposition). I'd respond depending on my perception of the person using the word rather than to the word itself.

I have a few friends that I call silly, especially when they are acting dorky and fun. Yes, it is a term of affection when you know someone well.

I generally only hear 'silly' used in a dismissive or negative way ("don't be so silly", "that's a silly idea"), and it's a but outdated too, it seems. I'm UK, if that makes a difference.

I usually say that to replace the word "stupid".

Its just nicer than saying "you're stupid"

if this girl wanted to say 'you're stupid' she would have said it straight up. she's not the type to hold back something if something needs to be said.

i've never heard the word 'silly' escape her lips. in fact i didn't even think such a girly word was even in her vocabulary.

I've used that before with my exes. It's less combative than "you're stupid" and plus it shows that you are being playful. Playful is good and fun! The other is being negative and hurtful.
