BehindBlueEyes
My stupid left ear has been completely plugged for three days now and I can't hear anything out of it. Other ears is fine. This is after a couple of days with some fly-by sickness that gave me painful sneezes, eye itching and watering, slight fever and terrible headache. I gourged on Benedryl and some aspirin, but other that making me feel drowsy and fatigued, it didn't do ****. Right now all that has cleared away, but the clogged ear is still there. It throws my balance off and I actually tripped over my own feet yesterday and fell, walking feels funny and I almost got in an accident yesterday from being dazed out. I tried to "pop" my ears by holding my nose and blowing....but it makes me feel like I am going to faint. I have no health insurance...soo.... and I wan tthis damn thing to be gone....any good home remedies? I'm about to dig my ear drum out....it's painful!
Anela
My right ear is swollen on the inside. I thought it was blocked, but that isn't the case. I hope you find something to help soon. The plugged ear is bad enough, but I hate feeling dizzy. Try having a good cry - it loosens things up a bit.
Author BehindBlueEyes
Have you guys tried a neti pot? Sometimes clearing out the sinus(es) will help open up the eustachian tubes and clear out any blockage. That's cool!..... I'll give it a whirl.. My blockage is bad.... My balance is awful, people probably think I am drunk. The worst part is not knowing how loud your voice is being....can't hear myself a lot.
Author BehindBlueEyes
I have this problem even when my sinuses are clear and I'm sober...even virtually! I can't wait to go to WalGreens and ask someone where they keep the Neti-Pots:laugh: They may think I am British!
Anela
I've never used a neti-pot. I'm taking probiotics for a stomach condition, and they're supposed to help with immune health. Mine is swollen, though - more like it's been bitten or infected in some other way.
dreamingoftigers
I had this happen in december. So aggravating! Only time it's happened. They sell ear syringes at the drug store. Fill it with warm tap water and gently squeeze it into your ear. Took me about half an hour with little bits coming out. Then, splat () Out came the blockage. Godsend.

I'm weird, but that "splat" dripping out of my ear sounds great lol... I like the feeling of wax dripping down the ear canal...then onto your pillow....love that better than popping huge blackheads with an inch long core:laugh:

ooglesnboogles
Similar to the 'warm water syringe' idea, you can use a hot compress (for those weirded out by spraying water in their ears. Heat up a small towel with hot water, wring it out, hold it to your ear for a few minutes or as long as needed. Also great over the eyes if you've been having allergy problems and they itch and/or are swollen from you pawin' at em =P Another thing for clogged up ears (clogged with earwax that is) is something called Debrox. Basically, it dissolves earwax. I had a cold/ear infection last year and while I was trying to dry out my ears after a hot shower, I inadvertently packed the wax in there. I didn't even feel it. After a few days of deafness in one ear, I went to the doctor, he told me to get that stuff from my local supermarket, and ten seconds after I put in the drops I could hear again.

Author BehindBlueEyes
Thanks for nothing. My ears are even worse right now. Has to be a more serious inner ear thing. Nice I have no health insurance and can't risk a 1,000 dollar bill. BS.
sweetkiwi
Rubbing alcohol. That's what I did. One time my grandma rolled up paper and stick it into my ear and lit the other end on fire. Super weird. Didn't work either. Hope you feel better soon sweetie.

Robert Z
Have you guys tried a neti pot? Sometimes clearing out the sinus(es) will help open up the eustachian tubes and clear out any blockage. You need to be VERY careful with those. Many people allow the pot to become contaminated OR they don't use sterile water. You can give yourself a potentially deadly brain infection that way. The barrier between the sinus cavity and the brain can easily pass bacteria. If you're going to pour water up your nose, at least make sure it's been boiled, distilled, or filtered, officials say - otherwise you could be at risk for a life-threatening brain infection. Neti Pots Linked To Deadly Brain Infections: CDC My mother had chronic infections in her ears and sinuses that we finally traced back to improper use of her neti pot. This went on for over two years! The worst of it was that the worse her infections got, the more she used her neti pot.
Robert Z
Here is what one online source says Ear Infection Treatment Rest: avoid further scuba dives, coughing, sneezing, bending, and attempts to equalize the ears.Pain may be relieved with 1-2 acetaminophen (Tylenol) every four hours and/or 1-2 ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) every 6-8 hours.Pseudoephedrine (the active ingredient in over-the-counter medications such as Sudafed) 30 mg tablets, one every six hours for 2-3 days, may ease ear pressure. Author BehindBlueEyes
I'm going to the doctors.... I think it's an infection because my other cold stuff(headache, runny nose, sneezing are gone.....except for the plugged ears. I have slight pain in the left one and I can literally hear my pulse in my left ear.. heartbeat or something. Probably the vibrations in the thick buildup or something. carhill
Last time I had that problem the doc used some hydrogen peroxide and a special waterpik to dislodge some 'stuff' which had become lodged in the ear canal. Don't try that at home. He did teach me how to use the hydrogen peroxide to loosen minor blockages. I also used a special saline solution and a nasal attachment for the waterpik to irrigate my sinuses and drain the eustachian tubes. That was kinda weird feeling but it did work and especially helped mitigate sinus headaches back when I was having those issues. The root cause apparently was a sinus infection gone amok. Had I sought prompt medical attention things likely would have gone far better. Hope it works out. IMO, the doc is your best bet. IIRC, the treatments didn't cost more than a couple hundred bucks, this back when I was paying cash for such things.
Author BehindBlueEyes
Success! I was finally able to pop my ear today.... and can hear again....still some stuff in there, but I think it will clear out.
Anela
BBE, I drank a mixture that I mentioned the other night in the OTT, and it's helped a lot. One tablespoon lemon juice, fresh One tablespoon honey One tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar (the good kind) Mixed into one mug of boiled water (just boiled, not microwaved)
