I imagine that yes, our problems would be solved if we constantly lived by the Golden Rule. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” 3 Link to post Share on other sites

Grumps Yeah, I guess that is a way a lot of people see it from that perspective, i.e. God is an intrinsic rather than extrinsic force. In that passage, Jesus is quoting Deut. 6, and speaking of Yahweh, which is often translated as "LORD" (when you see it in caps, it is the English translation of Yahweh, Jehovah); the God Jesus is speaking about is not a force of nature, but a being that is far above man... Deuteronomy 6 (Blue Letter Bible: KJV - King James Version) In Christianity, the golden rule goes hand in hand with loving the Lord (Yahweh) with all your heart, soul, and mind. And also loving your neighbor as yourself...these two commandments summarize the law and the prophets. We may not agree on all these points, but I'm glad to see you respect the golden rule b/c we can find some common ground grumps Thanks for the cool thread!! Please do not let that keep you from commenting in the future....in fact, bringing up karma made me go back and read some wonderful books on reincarnation that I forgot I had. It gave me an article idea also which I sold in a pitch yesterday about our need for punishment/rewards in our spiritual journey. Made for an interesting morning... watching ducks and hummingbirds and understanding that my mind is different from other minds, and though we are connected, our perceptions are different regarding our own motives and egos. Karma is interesting and could be pondered for a long time without definitive conclusion...or as a tenant of Indian religions (Buddhism/Hinduism), which I find especially fascinating. I am thinking of one thing I can do today for another that would fill the requirements of the Golden Rule. Perhaps I will find it as I go into town. Grumps 1 Link to post Share on other sites
