How to make an impression

Recommended Posts

I just moved to a new state to start graduate school and didn't know anybody before I got here. Its been a little over a month since I moved and my coworkers/classmates still seemed a little reserved about me. Just about all of them have known each other for over a year now. I have asked them to let me know what they are doing over the weekend, invited them over, hung out after school and it always seems that I'm being blown off. Lately it seems like they have been talking about me. They seem to use code around me and a few people will ask me the same random questions, like they were discussed before hand.

How can I make an impression and get them to let me in so they can get to know me better and see where it goes from there? There are also a couple of girls that I would be interested in getting to know better but getting to talk to them isn't easy with everyone else there. Whatever advice people can give would be great.

When I read your post I thought my sister is posting in the beginning. She also is new at a graduate school at a new state for her. She called my mom recently and was crying and telling about being isolated just as you say. There is a girl who didn’t greet her from the beginning and then she did so that everyone kind of ignores my sister. I don’t really know the details. We even thought that it is because my sister is not American that is why she is left out. But she did great at her the previous university. I told mom she had PMS maybe. LOL

What I have to say you is that probable every beginning is hard at a new place. Just be yourself. Self confident, patient. Find some hobbies not to focus on it too much. Good luck!
