Braceface as an adult

Recommended Posts

I'm 20 years old and I just got braces today. Getting the braces was my idea ok and I really thought that I was mature enough to look past the vanity and physical aspect of myself but now I just feel soo self concious.

I'm thinking about deferring my enrollment to my transfer college bc I just don't want to meet people when I have these things on. and forget trying to get a bf when I look like a 12 yr old again

<SIGH>

Has anyone had braces when they were an adult? Is there anyway to get over being so self conscious? or atleast these crappy pain in my teeth?

How long are you going to have them on for? I have been contemplating getting some braces, but I don't like how they look. I want to get the invisalign but I don't know if they do work.

I know that if you're an adult, you qualify for Invisalign braces, if you're worried about the cosmetic aspect.

I looked into invisalign before I looked into braces. I was told it would be about the same price regardless. There are only certain types of problems that can be fixed with it. I have a crossbite on the side so I was told by several dentists that it couldn't be used although in the commercials they say it can. In the commercials they made it seem like they could fix anything but lots of dentists told me otherwise.

Most offices do free consultations and while you were there they explained everything about it.

I got braces when I got my first job. It was fine. The day I got them on, the guys at work all wanted to kiss me to see how it was  I figured it was way better to be seen in braces than with the teeth that needed fixing! I finally felt happy about smiling because I knew the flaws were being repaired.

I've been told it's around $3,500 for Invisilign.

Oh, I'd forgotten all about that. Any orthodontic treatment is expensive though, not just Invisalign--could you talk to your insurance company?

My dad participated in the trial and didn't have to pay at all.

I got mine on at teh age of 20, in december of 2001, got the ful set two days before my 21st birthday, in april of 02, and got them off just last month, august 3rd of 04. ANd I had the opportunity to have them taken off a couple of times, but I waited to have them off just to finish up some stuff. And it was well worth it. Youll get used to them quicker than you think. And think of the beautiful teeth youll have. I remember looking around school, at other college kids, and though I only saw a few with braces, you wont be the only one with them. So dont put off transfering, youll be suprised at how many people will NOT judge you on that. Espeically in school

They worked for plenty of people well, but my dad was too irresponsible and his results were inconclusive.

Evidently you have to *wear* them for it to be effectiv,e, go figure :p

6 months which isn't as bad as it could be but still, I'm trying to transfer to a school in NYC and somehow I don't think braces would be considered very metropolitan. =/

I am in the dental field, and have had braces myself. You do get used to them pretty quickly, and after the first month or so, the only pain that is experienced (that I found) was when they changed the wire. The first couple weeks I had them on though, my teeth were obviously not used to that kind of pressure/tension, so you notice the pain more.

If you find the brackets are bugging your lips/cheeks, get the wax your orthodontist can provide to put on top of them. It'll make them as comfortable as possible.

Ortho is expensive, but well worth it. The results can be amazingly beautiful and astonishing.

Lately I have found that to have changed quite a bit. Many people are now realizing how lucky people are to have braces, and it is somewhat being seen as a "status thing", since those who have the opportunity to get braces tend to have money (or so many people believe), and they will develop a beautiful smile.

Also, I do know cross bites can be one of the most difficult tooth alignments to fix, so if the orthodontists say that conventional braces are the best option, I would go with their opinions.

Just remember, take GREAT care of your teeth and gum's while you have braces. The braces themselves allow for more plaque collection, and therefore it can be held against the teeth and gums longer leading to a higher risk of cavities and gum disease. Floss (I know it's a pain... but it's for the best!!), brush well.. and maybe look into other dental accessories that may aide in cleaning around the braces (ie/ proxy brushes, a waterpic, etc.)

Good luck, and remember to always keep smiling!!
