Ev888
I have the fear of someone braking inot my house. And this phobia has gotten so bad I don't even feel that safe in my own home. I really want to know If I can Do anything about this and what. And also Every night beofre I go to bed I make to see if the doors are locked atleast 2 or 3 times. And everytime I Hear a strange noise or a car door slam I have to look out my window and see if the car is in my driveway or something like that. And also I guess this would kind of go together with my other phobia and that is Fear or Phobia of being watched. Every night I look out my window for atleast 5 minutes at a time to make sure no one is looking in at me. yes I know this is very strange..lol..well does anyone else have this problem? Well Please someone give me advice...
confused_as_usual
Do you have any particular reason to be fearful? Someone in your life that you are afraid of? Do you live in a bad part of town? Have you experienced this type of crime before? When I moved into my new house I had the same initial reaction, as the city I moved to is known for home invasions, in certain parts (not my neighborhood). Where I live, however, you can't leave your garage door open overnight and expect to find everything the next morning (even though I do live in an upscale neighborhood). Just the nature of things here. Anyway, I got an alarm system installed. Put decals everywhere and there is a sign in front. I keep the gate locked. It helps to have a dog. I also bought those wooden dowels to put in the four sliding glass doors I have. You might consider some of these options to make you feel better. But if there is no reason for you to be fearful, you might benefit from an anti-depressant designed to treat OCD. Hope this helps.
red-rose-in-winter
Have you considered installing a security camera near your doors and windows? My husband and I put one up when our lawn mower got stolen (in the middle of the day) when we left to go to the grocery store. You can get one or two cameras and install them on the sides of your house and keep the monitor by your bed. It will pick up anything that moves since the cameras have night vision. Also, you can hook them up to a VCR and record all that goes on. You can also put deadbolt locks on all your doors. That's a little extra security in addition to your door locks. break-in
Hi! sorry to hear about your fear. Especially because I share it. Only difference is that I was broken into. Luckily I wasn't at home but I was still violated and cannot move on. I did have a security system installed which helped immensely. Alsways sleep with the phone next to you. Install motion lights outside. And maybe hang bells on your doors so you can hear if someone is opening it. You could also call your local police department and ask them for tips on how to be safe. Good luck! Karen
moimeme
If you find yourself compulsively checking and rechecking things, you may well have OCD. Check out this site and see if the information applies to you http://www.ocfoundation.org

bulldoggirl
Hi there, I'm sorry you're feeling this way! I can relate though....I get paranoid sometimes when I think I hear something in our house, usually it's just one of the cats though! We have bells on our back door, so you can hear when someone opens it. My husband has been working night shift for a couple of weeks, and I find myself checking & rechecking the door locks & windows too....just to be safe! I feel much safer when he's home though (even though he could sleep through a nuclear war!)
brashgal
I suppose it depends upon how long you've been feeling this way and performing all these acts. I know I felt especially vulnerable in the first few weeks after my ex moved out. We had always left the doors out back unlocked since the yard is fenced, I started locking every door, even during the day. I would get up and investigate every noise and check the windows (I probably would have had a heart attack if I found someone staring back at me). I still lock doors consistently and check them most nights before I go to bed but I finally relaxed after a few weeks. If there have been a lot of break-ins in your neighborhood, it's probably not a bad idea to be cautious. Also, although the dog is gone, I left the BEWARE OF DOG sign up on the back gate. I figure it might deter someone who was thinking of hopping the fence. I also have a couple of lights on timers that are on for a few hours every night - that way, if I am out it looks like there might be someone home. I hope your fear becomes more manageable. If not, get help!
