My boy is going to Iraq

Recommended Posts

My boyfriend of almost 5 years is in reserves and is being recalled to active duty. By Oct 6 he has to start his retraining for operation Iraq, and most likely will be stationed in Iraq b/c he is a combat engineer. Basically, combat engineers are infantry specialists that deal with explosives.

Anyone else out there in a similar situation????????? I have so many worries that I can't even begin to describe. I have faith and love for him and in my Lord. But I'm only 22 yrs. old I can't believe this is happening.

Greenl - I'm so sorry to hear this. My stepson is also a reservist who was called up and he is in Iraq now. He was engaged and they got married before he left. She's 23 and he is 24. This is very difficult for us all, but most of all her. I feel for you. There are lots of women in your position, unfortunately.

I have numerous websites that I think will help. I will send them to you through PM. The best thing you can do for yourself while he is gone is to get involved with the support systems that the military offers for families and loved ones. Stay in touch with other wives and girlfriends who are in the same place you are. It's a great way to share information and support each other.

With the communication the way it is nowadays, you will get to hear from him regularly and be assured that things are okay. It makes a world of difference. Our son gets his mail within about two weeks of when we send it, which is remarkable. So far he's been able to call home at least once a week, which is a godsend. Hopefully you will be one of the lucky ones as well.

The most important thing you can do for your boyfriend is to be supportive and try not to let your personal feelings come first. Try your best to stay positive and not add stress to his already stressful life. Surround yourself with friends and family for YOUR support.

Best of luck to you. PM me anytime.

My thoughts and prayers are with both of you. If you don't mind sharing first names I will add them to my yellow ribbon wall. We light candles everyday for the soldiers on our wall.

A good friend of mine is watching her boyfriend ship out next week. This is so hard for everyone.

How very sweet, RowanRavyn. My stepson's name is John and his cousin's name is Kevin. He's also in Iraq, on the same base as John.

It is support like yours that makes it more bearable for us. Thanks.

my boyfriend of almost five years will be leaving in january to iraq. he gradautes from basic, gets seven days home, and then leaves... i can definitely relate to ur situation. i am only sixteen... most of my friends only have homework to worry about and don't even have a boyfriend. i worry that i may never see my boyfriend again... it is a difficult situation no doubt. but keep in touch with people who understand wut it is like... that will keep u sane... and stay strong for your soldier... hold ur head high even though u don't even think u can lift it...
