robaday
Went for a health assessment at a gym I recently joined. Guy did a reading of my blood pressure said it was 140 over 80 (not 100% sure what that meant) and that it was high and to get it checked out. He advised not doing intense exercise. Thing is I play soccer twice a week, swim everyday and can run 5km without much dificulty. I get I probably do have high blood pressure - I smoke and drink, but would anyone else have any advice? Could there be another reason this reading was high on that day? I had been out the previous 3 nights, when I dont normally drink more than twice a month....Ill be honest I dont know much about this stuff
Leegh
It is a little bit high, but not at all extremely high. Blood pressure varies a lot during the day, and regular alcohol comsumption can raise it significiently, if someone is a heavy drinker, buy your blood pressure to me seems just a little above normal. I have had my blood pressure much higher, for example, one time when a deer ran in front of my car, and I took my blood pressure when I got home and it was sky high.
fortyninethousand322
Keep an eye on it. My dad was told he had high blood pressure and he ignored it. A couple months later he got a detached retina as a result. Still in the recovery process almost a year later. Has a hard time driving and seeing things. You could purchase a small home blood pressure machine. Keep a daily record of your blood pressure. They're not too expensive I think.

FitChick
See your doctor. I wouldn't place much stock in what someone at a gym told you. If you can't afford a doctor, at least go to Rite Aid or CVS where they have a blood pressure cuff near the pharmacy. If you get a similarly high reading, then perhaps go into one of those low cost walk in clinics they have in malls these days. Do you add salt to all of your food? Do you eat salty food generally? Does anyone in your family have high blood pressure? Are you overweight? I saw my doctor a couple of weeks ago and I think mine was 126/67 and was told that was very good. Author robaday
Do you add salt to all of your food? Yes I do Do you eat salty food generally? Yes I do Does anyone in your family have high blood pressure? My mother doesnt. I am pretty sure my Dad would - he is very big drinker and smokes twice as much as me (some 40 a day) Are you overweight? No, if anything my body fat ratio is on the low side - Im reasonably fit, eat relatively healthily most of the time (lots of fruit&veg not much fat), and these days only drink twice a month or so (although admittedly those are big nights). Think this is my past catching up with me - between 18-25 I partied like no tomorrow 5 days a week, incl drugs&lots of alcohol. Cut back majorly since then, but Im not surprised by this. Just wondered others experiences - I will get this checked out ASAP, and thanks for your advice;)
stefanwoodall
There are many reasons behind high blood pressure such as smoking, overweight, alcoholism. But Stress is one of the most important cause of high blood pressure.

It surprised me, because I was very athletic and eating healthily back then, a non smoker etc. I cut back on how often I was drinking and switched my diet from healthy to ultra-clean, blood pressure has been very healthy since.
