Bipolar Girlfriend Broke up with Me

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I've posted here before about this particular breakup. I happened just over a week ago and I guess it's hard to get my mind off of it. If you need context, my story can be found here (http://www.loveshack.org/forums/breaking-up-reconciliation-coping/breaks-breaking-up/388471-she-says-she-loves-me-why-break-up).

I'm beginning to make peace with our breakup, but there are just a few questions that nag me, so I was wondering if any LS members had some insight to share.

First off, my girlfriend has bipolar disorder (properly diagnosed, several years ago). However, she doesn't believe in medication, and having had serious medical problems in the past myself, I can't blame her for not wanting to take her meds. Basically, I got the feeling she has been rather depressed lately. I wasn't sure if it was normal, or symptomatic of her disorder.

If you read my other thread, you'll realize that this breakup seemed to come out of the blue. When I mentioned to my friends that she happened to have bipolar disorder, some of them noted how sudden breakups and mood swings that result in them "wanting a change in their lives" are fairly common.

Basically, I just graduated university while she graduated last year. I have a work internship and Master's degree program lined up for my future. She's been applying to law school and legal studies for the past two years, but has not had a reply as of yet, as far as I know. She's mentioned to me before how it felt like her life had lost direction as her entire life has sort of been put on hold until she hears back from a university who'll take her.

I guess I'm asking if anyone has any knowledge or experience of being in a relationship with someone who has bipolar disorder. Is this thing common? If she is in a state of depression right now, do the NC rules still apply or should there be another approach (I have yet to contact her at all since the breakup)? Any insight would be helpful.
