meanon
I read this article and thought it may be of interest to a few of you fellow Shackers. It's looking ahead to the future of the family on the basis that the dramatic change of the last 30 years will ease and instead there will be a consolidation of existing trends. From the perspective of the future, the picture is not one of family breakdown but rather family reinvention with a greater degree of social acceptance of many diverse family forms and co-parenting arrangements. The future of the family is stronger than ever, all the research shows that families are hugely valued and will continue to be. The other idea I found interesting is the observation that the growth of individualisation has shaped family experience in two major ways one of which (serial monogomy) is disruptive and difficult for children and the other of which (parenting) has brought children major benefits. Increasingly, people choose to develop only those relationships that promise them emotional integrity. At the same time there is a much greater degree of emotional investment in parenting which has increased both the quality and functionality of the relationship. The ideal of a life long partner and the desire of children to remain in a household with both their natural parents is expected to continue but there will be less moral panic about family breakdown, fewer expectations of achieving certain relationship milestones and more choice. http://www.guardian.co.uk/2020/story/0,,1309402,00.html
