what's with this guy? :(

So there's this guy at my uni and I'm curious if he likes me or just is weirded out by me. We've known each other several months and we see each other a lot because we both work in the same place. But I don't think we're friends really because he never initiates conversation and whenever I try to talk to him he just gives supershort answers and the convo dies right away. But we've talked enough to be more than just acquaintances and we used to have lunch together periodically. We have a class together and I'm confused because every day he walks in and sits in front of me but doesn't acknowledge me, just sits on his phone until the prof shows up. But then after class he hovers by me and waits and we walk out together, but he doesn't actually say anything or make eye contact. Then I finally ask him how it's going and he always looks down and says fine, and either smiles or sometimes gives a half-smile/half-grimace like he's in pain. Then we walk together in silence for awhile until one of us asks about the homework.

 

For the homework for this class we're supposed to work with partners, and we are homework partners (he asked me to work with him). He's smarter than me so I know he didn't ask to get all the answers lol. We've met up a few times to work on the homework, but sometimes he just leaves really abruptly for no reason before we've done much of the work. I've said 3-4 times that he can get a better hw partner(mostly because I don't want to work with him since he ignores me), but he always just shakes his head and doesn't say anythign else. Two nights ago we ended up having dinner and then working on homework at my apartment until 12:30am, and we seemed to get along fine and have a good time. But then I saw him today and he just walked right past me and looked at me but didn't say a word.

 

Sometimes if we are at a club meeting together or in class I will see him staring at me alot, and he also seems to glare at me whenever I talk to another guy. But this behavior has been going on for almost as long as I've known him yet he has never asked me out or even tried to become friends or be friendly at all.

 

So is he just weirded out by me, or what? I have no idea why he wants to work on homework with me if he doesn't want to talk to me, or why he hangs around after class even though he doesn't want to have a conversation. Or why he grimaces like he's in pain half the times I smile and say hello. What's his deal?

 

I'm getting really sad and frustrated about this so I'd really appreciate any insight.
