edgygirl
On a first date? Can you say CREEPY? This is why dating advice here is RIDICULOUS!?!?! If the average guy actually did that, and not in fantasy land, he'd not get very far. He said she's his girlfriend. Where did he mention it's a first date? Anyway - I think this is cultural. In the country I was born it's considered VERY odd when couples don't seat side by side. But people there are much warmer and friendly, and definitely not afraid of PDA. It kind of makes sense people don't usually do it in the US, it's a different mentality here.
Cutiepie1976
It's also dependent on the city in the US. Side-by-side seating for two is standard in many restaurants I frequent. Let the woman decide IMO. If I really like the guy, I will ask him to sit next to me as he goes to sit across. If a date asks me to sit next to him and I don't want to, I'll conveniently not hear the request, misunderstand what he's saying, or "absentmindedly" overlook the chair he pulled out for me or the side-by-side settings that many restaurants do. Millions of different ways to politely get out of it without hurting his feelings if I'm not comfortable. No matter how persistent and determined he is, I will "cluelessly" manage not to end up beside him. With my boyfriend, we sat across from each other at dinner on our first date, but by dessert we were holding hands, and he'd leaned over and given me a quick kiss. After dinner, he gave me the option of going to a winebar, and when we got there he sat across from me. I asked him to come sit beside me because it would be easier to talk that way. Total flirt fest! When they closed down, he suggested a nice lounge. He tried sitting across from me again and I dragged him over by the hand. Big Cheshire grin on his face at that point. He still makes a half attempt to sit across from me each time we go out, even though he'll end up beside me. I think he loves the invite because he still gets a wide grin whenever I pat the spot beside me after I sit down:) Different strokes for different folks!
