Cranberry
I'm in my last year of high school, and I'm not sure what to do with my life. The obvious choice is university but I really don't think its for me. I'm a fairly intelligent person, but the problem is I'm a free spirit (as cheesy as that sounds) I really don't do well in a strict system. I think I just want to take off and go work and live in another country for a while. Or teach english as a second language somehwere. Does anyone have any suggestions as to alternatives to post secondary? (I will go to school eventually, I just want to live a little first.) Anyways, any info or suggestions are appreciated because I am one confused lady at the moment.
Moose
Have you thought about joining the military? I know you said you don't do well in a strict setting, that's why I suggest to plunge into it and get that discipline.
Cranberry
That would be a good idea...if it weren't for one thing: I'm kinda Canadian lol. I'm also a against war.
loveregardless
no milliatary no no! I am 19 and have been out of school for two years now...I have just NOW decided what I want to do with my life. There are all kinds of courses you can take online now...you can get all kinds of certifications and degrees, just make sure you check into their programs and that they are accredited. I am very much a free spirit and I REFUSE to be a part of "the system"...i know exactly what you mean. I have never done well in a strict environment...I'm way too free and different to be like that. So I have found a field that works for me. Once you figure out what you are interested in and do some researching and give it some time, it'll hit ya..and you'll just know. If you have the money I totally suggest traveling for a while, while your exploring and researching and getting to know your "authentic self"...I believe that everyone was put on this earth for a specific purpose and that everyone was givin certain abilities and gifts for a purpose...learn how to be happy using yours and then you'll know! moimeme
Have a read of Barbara Sher's 'Wishcraft'. It's free online here: http://www.wishcraft.com/ Barbara Sher doesn't try to help you figure out what career you want; rather she wants you to imagine the life you'd like to live and figure your way to get there. She suggests lots of strategies for it. I've been through various career counselling regimes, and IMHO, this is one of the better ways to go about it. You can also do the standard interest inventory tests - all those sorts of things will help give you some ideas that you can use as you make your decision. Here's a good online set: http://www.cdm.uwaterloo.ca/index.asp
dyermaker
Q: I'm a free spirit, and a University is too disciplined for me. A: Join the military. Did I miss something?
moimeme
No, you had the privilege of watching the overly-buttoned-down panic at the idea of free spirits roaming the earth unfettered by conformity and herd mentality.
flower
If teaching English is your cup of tea, first get the necessary qualifications and then seek out countries that need English teachers such as Japan, Cambodia...
jesusfist
just take a year off from education, get a job, take up some hobbies like martial arts or mountain biking, snowboarding, or travel etc. Then after that year you may have a few more ideas of where you want to go due to new experiences. just an idea
