Going on Vacation alone

Has anyone else experienced anything like that? There was literally no interest in the museum once people found out I went alone. It was like everyone felt bad for me.

I've had a few rare people react that way when I told them I travel alone. They were generally the sort of people who were shackled to home because of young kids and lack of money. (Meaning I think that some of the reaction was rooted in jealousy.)

Most people actually seem to envy the fact that I can do exactly what I want to do. I'm single so it's exclusively my money and time, and I can spend it however I want to.

You might even meet that someone special...

I highly doubt that. Women have proved they want nothing to do with me :)

If you don't want to go alone go with a tour group. Of course, most of those people will be retired. Maybe they could fix you up with their daughter if they liked you.

LOL I understand and respect the suggestions on here....but a tour group? What are the odds that the people in the tour group, or their daughter live near me??

I would never, ever go anywhere with strangers I dont know. I am kinda picky about the type of people I can spend long periods of time with. I am definitely not a social butterfly.

I've vacationed alone, from spans of a couple of days to a week, and it's just not for me. I'm not overly social, so I don't spark up conversations with strangers (they're with their significant others anyway), and I spend most of the time trying to convince myself that I'm having a good time. I always return more depressed and aware of my solitude than is outweighed by the adventure.

I have contemplated doing a camping trip this summer, just me and my dog in the wilds. That has appeal to me as I can roleplay characters from books and movies, haha. I doubt I'll do it though. It feels like I'm reaching to do it just because "I should," or so I'll have a story to tell people who ask me what I did this summer.

I'm happier not vacationing alone, and I'll just wait until I have a girl to do such things again.

Do any of you go on vacation alone? There are a lot of places I'd like to visit. But I dont know if I could go by myself. Not sure if I would still enjoy it with the thoughts of experiencing everything alone, unable to share it with anyone.

And no I really wouldnt want to go with any of the guys I know. They just arent in to the things I'm in, and I wouldnt want to spend days with one of them, with no break.

I think most people would consider someone as very odd to vacation alone, I know I'd feel very odd vacationing/travelling on my own anyway.

My best friend went overseas alone a few times. At first I didn't get it, but on a recent family trip I realised the genius. Alone you have no one to slow you down, and can see everything you wanted to and operate on your schedule. I know I would have been able to accomplish much more if my mum and sister hadn't gone into every store we went by to look at clothes :|

If travelling alone, going on tours with companies such Intrepid and Gap Adventures that are more aimed at younger people is probably the easiest option. A higher proportion of people on these tours should be travelling alone so it will be easy to get to know them and make new friends, so you shouldn't feel lonely. That is what I have been told anyway.

Alternatively backpacking and staying in hostels is a good and easy way to meet new people. Most people staying in hostels are also travelling alone so tend to be quite open to meeting new people.
