Didn't get dream job... crushed!

Howdy folks,

Just looking for a bit of advice / perspective from experienced people...

Basically, i've been stuck in an okay but kinda crappy office job for about a year and a half now... it was just meant to tide me over until I saved enough to go back and do my graduate diploma in what I really want to do. My current job is in a totally unrelated industry to my degree, it just doesn't suit me at all and I've been dying to get out for a while now....

So I've been waiting since about March to apply for my dream job- it seemed like it was tailor-made for somebody with my experience, interests and primary degree, and would have provided me with great further experience for my actual career... well, I got myself all psyched up for the interview and did pretty well... but I only came in second place. To say I'm devastated , is an understatement. I just feel like I put so much effort in to my application and wanted it so, so badly and... nothing. Just a giant disappointment. :(

So, I don't know where to go from here. it's not like these kinda jobs are ten-a-penny right now, so I don't even see a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Don't get me wrong, I've not got jobs I've applied for before but they were mostly part-time jobs to get me through school/college. i've never been this upset about not getting a job... and to come second is almost worse cause I keep torturing myself over what I did wrong...

I'll be really honest here, I feel like my career is going nowhere, and on the night I found out I didn't get it, I felt like topping myself, no exaggeration.

sooo... any tips/ advice on how to get over it? :p

Have you any idea who pipped you to the post, and why?

Don't give up.

I've been waiting a good while longer than you to find my dream job and I finally got it!

What job were you looking to get?

I'm not actually sure why they got it over me. Not tooting my own horn here, but on paper, I was perfect! They must have just interviewed better than me.

I want to be a librarian, which apparently is a lot harder to get into than I thought. Did it take you long to land your job?

I've no interest, money, or way of starting my own business, as it's not related to what I want to do at all ( to the other poster who replied!) but thanks for the response!:)

I've been looking for other jobs that are similar but there is nada. I'm seriously, seriously down about it.

Put your feelers out and subscribe to every possible internet job search engine you can.

Send out CV's to local authorities and volunteer in second-hand bookshops. keep your knowledge-base on current literary fads up to date, and Don't - give - up!!

Something will come of it.

Me? I took 22 years to get my dream job.

But I had a family and international move get in the way.

Don't base your prospects on my time-span.

What I mean is, never lose grip of your determination!

It's a tough market right now with more individuals than jobs. There is almost always someone more qualified than you, it's just a fact. However, this isn't your last chance. If there was anything you think you needed to improve on, work on it and keep trying. Your persistence will eventually pay off, you just have to stay positive.

You know, it may show initiative to call them and ask them.

Tell them you have no gripe or problem with their decision, (Ok, so lie! :D) but ask them to give you pointers on where they feel you could improve; what is it they were looking for that you didn't provide? it would help you to enhance your own abilities....

And ask them to please keep your details on file in the eventuality of another opening....
