Fashion for clueless guy?

Recommended Posts

So I need some help improving my wardrobe. From the input of my friends, they think I dress like a homeless person which isn't exactly what I'm going for ><.

I seriously have no idea what looks nice and what doesn't. I didn't even buy most of my clothes myself.

I'm just looking to have a standard look. Nothing fancy. Just want to look like I know what I'm doing fashion wise(even though I don't... at all).

Where should I even start?

Depends. Are you in shape?

If you are not in shape I recommend something that doesn't exactly show it off like a T and an over shirt but thats just what I would do when I wanted to hide I was overweight. I didn't think it looked that great.

If you are in shape just go for a T-shirt of your choice that fits nicely and jeans. Works for me. When its colder just find a nice coat or a couple of hoodies or whatever.

Nice jeans, nice shoes, black leather belt silver buckle, t shirt, button up shirt (plaid or solid color), nice sunglasses, brush your teeth/comb your hair/shower/wear cologne.

Look at how your friends dress as well. If they dress kind of like I outlined above then they may have good advice, if they wear sports jerseys everywhere not so much. Okay when you are 14-15 but past that it gets to be white trash/ghetto fabulous.

I'm not in shape as in like I have huge muscles. I'm pretty lean though because I run a lot.

Thanks for the input! What do you mean by nice jeans and nice shoes? My roommate dresses relatively well but he says his sister helps him buy stuff. I'm thinking of maybe asking one of my girl friends and take them shopping with me. Idk though. There's no way to be certain they know how to dress a guy either.

Ask somebody who works in the clothing stores to help you.

I might do that...

Does anyone know where I get some reasonably priced button down shirts that you don't have to tucked in?

In my experience, clothes generally fit and look better on a thinner frame than an overly muscular frame.

Eh, I'd be hesitant to do this. They are likely not to know a damn thing (or very little) about men's clothing and fashion.

Really? I mean let's be honest here... The only reason I want to dress nice is to look good for the ladies. If the ladies think something is nice I guess I don't exactly care if it's not fashionable and whatnot.

Look at hipster sites like Buckle.com for ideas on how to look then go to stores. I've heard of different brands but when it doubt levis, boot cut (not skinny) and if you are a skinny in shape dude ATHLETIC FIT t-shirts and slim fit button up shirts might be good.

When I was broke and 20-25 I'd go to Gottschalks which is an outlet store that blows out stuff from other stores. So a pair of jeans will be 12-15$ rather than 40$ at the mall, cologne is also on the cheap side, they have button up shirts, etc.

When you get nice button up shirts iron them, do not fold your pants let them hang up in the closet. Colognes go to the mall fragrance and smell a bunch, remember the ones you liked and then buy online or at discount stores.

Google for "boat shoes" like Timberland and then look at casual/dress 'boot' style shoes like Docs and Redwings.

If you are young like 20-22 then you can get away with band shirts like your favorite faded Jimi Hendrix shirt or whatever, if you're older that gets to be a no-no.

Sunglasses sites will have fitment guides, different faces need different style sunglasses.

Asking your roommates sister for advice would be good just don't go to the mall to buy lots of stuff it's too expensive there.

the biggest mistake a man can make is to follow fashion....its dated.....and changes seasonally........i dont think guys should change to fit fashion....but make fashion fit them......nto follow any fads

go for what makes you comfortable and looks decent.........make sure you wear good shoes(for the reason your feet carry you for your whole entire life)

develop your own style...i like classic style on guys...i am a bit old fashioned.........no brands....a white shirt defines a guy to me....ultimately masculine......i think a lot of women like white shirts....lol...because they keep pinching them from their boyfriends or partners....to wear to bed...its unconscious and subliminal..........

tailored pants or decent jeans..nice boots or shoes never wwear shoddy footwear......and a guy who can rock a suit in that he feels comfortable in it....but thats my personal preference ...deb

Thanks for the input. Right now my clothes are comfortable but they don't really fit me really well (hence why my roommate say I dress like homeless person). I'm currently 20 and in college so I'm thinking maybe just jeans and quality t-shirts/button downs?

What looks good on you isn't about fashion or what one woman thinks.

You need to find the colours that flatter your skin tone and your eyes. If you have blue eyes for example wearing certain shades of blue can make them look very striking.

You need to find the cut that flatters you. The hardest thing in my experience is to find trousers (including jeans) that look perfect on you. However, once you find the cut and your weight doesn't fluctuate much, you will be set.

Agree with Hokie on his distate for hipster clothing, a lot of that is based on trends and look absolutely awful on men. A girl could possibly pick those kind of clothes for you because they look on trend yet if you wore fitted clothes that suited your shape and skin tone you would look a million times better.

This is the biggest mistake I see people make, both men and women. They think they can buy a size bigger and just put a belt on. No. You have to find the size and cut. Yes it is a pain in the backside but you don't have to go through this experience many times to work out how to look more polished.

It-is-what-it-is.

What country/region do you live in? It helps to identify resources for you.

So good fitting jeans are a must. Spend some time on this purchase. Baggy, saggy jeans do nothing for your appearance so you need to get ones that fit. These do not have to be fancy name brands, Its about the fit. You should try several types out all brands are cut differently so will look different on you.

If you go to a discount store you will need to bring someone with you, if you go to a department store they are more likely to have someone who can help you.

Next get plain t-shirts, boat neck (round neck) tagless, you can get at Target, WALMART. Buy new undies and socks, whatever is your preference.

Get a nice belt. I bought my husband one that is back on one side and brown on the other. It's good if you can afford only one. Silver buckle plain.

Shoes. If you are a student, you likely need a pair of casual shoes. Could be tennis shoes (not running shoes) or boat shoes, but likely this is where you spend a little more money.

Ok, now shirts are personal but here are some rules. Build your core wardrobe of plaid, stripped or plain button down shirts. You can get these in lots of places, but I have been really successful at getting really good prices at Marshall's, and BJs (like COSCO). Of course, sales at department stores.

Now. Throw away or donate all your old clothes.

Go to a barber or salon and get a good haircut.

Go to the men's counter at the department store and have them tell you how to care for your skin (or YouTube) buy the stuff at the drugstore.

Oh and, you can ask your girl friends for help. If they dress nice the they will know what looks good.

Good luck

the homeless person comment is probably a lot to do with the size of what your wearing than what your wearing!

Get a size that actually fits you.

Other than that and providing your in shape you wont go far wrong.

Im a big fan of checked shirts and shirts really but I do love a check...I have a lot of shirts! :L Thou summer I wear a lot of checked shorts so then I have to take a temporary holiday from my shirts :( and move into T-shirts

When its cold I still think hoodies are fine and there not fitted but if I want to look smarter i'll wear a jumper - I quite like those like pull over knit jumpers with like the collar....but that's just me, you have whatever style you have, as long as it fits well and isn't worn out it'll look fine.

same with shoes - new shoes make you look smart, worn out ones not so much.

Same with hair - a sharp look will always look good.

Strongly agree with the bolded. If I blindly followed fashion trends then I'd probably be rocking faded skinny jeans and aviator sunglasses or whatever. Thank goodness I don't...those things would look silly on me.

Patrol...Eggplant's advice is solid, but don't be afraid to say "no" if you don't like the clothing salesperson's suggestions. Some sales people will recommend almost anything to try and get your money in a sale.

If you have a good friend who knows you well, and seems knowledgeable about clothing, then it might be a good idea to have him or her assist you. But again, be willing to say "no" if you dislike the suggestions.

Be mindful that what looks good on one guy may look bad on the next guy.

And yeah, wearing clothes that fit well goes a LONG way.

Dont dress like a metrosexual...Many women will tell you thats what they think you should do, while their bf wears torn jeans and a ball cap.

Just because it looks good on some 6' 135 lb guy doesnt mean its going to look good on the average Joe.. Dress like a guy..Wear jeans that fit...Clean sneakers..a good fitting shirt, Get a quality watch.,...DONT wear one of those tight, shiny, button up shirts unless you have zero body fat and not one hint of manboobs or you will look like an absolute jackass.

And,I dont get the whole gelled hair with the little "flip up" in the front..Most women i know think it looks ridiculous, yet its all the rage...I dunno...*shrug*

And one last thing...Smelling good goes farther than dressing good, in my humble experience...While you cant slap some high quality fragrance on a dirtball or an ugly ass mofo and expect miracles, it works for the rest of us.:p
