Avoiding driving to keep a clean insurance record!

Recommended Posts

Eight years, eleven months, and three weeks ago I switched auto insurance companies to get a better rate. I haven't had an accident or any tickets since. If I make it to nine years without an accident, I can avoid having a future accident surcharge added to my premiums. Plus I wouldn't lose my accident-free discount for at least two or three years. I have three more days to go!!! I marked the date on my electronic calendar two years ago when I read it in my policy. Last week it popped-up a reminder to me of this upcoming milestone event. If I make it three more days without an accident, I could save about $400 per year in surcharge and lost discount.

The last few days, I have been having drivers turn right in front of me or roll half-way past the stop sign into my lane (making me swerve away). Today a car cut me off. If I didn't move, then it could've side-swipped me. It's like drivers know what's up!

So, I made it home safely from work today. Parked my car and decided NOT to drive it for three more days. I will take public transportation to work, and not go out at night. I want my car to make it to the nine year insurance premium period.

I feel guilty. Like a major league baseball player who sits out the last game of the season to keep a personal best batting average. But, $400 a year in savings is worth a couple days riding public transportation.

Would you do the same?

Call me crazy, but I think the company set up those instances. Wouldn't surprise me if you were tracked, they hired PI's to see where you go, and try to get you into an accident. Don't touch that car.

No, I wouldn't, meaning park a vehicle for three days to purportedly avoid circumstances which might risk premium savings/rate increases, but I would be having a conversation with my insurance agent. I've got just over 38 years of a similarly clean driving record and remind my agent of that every time we talk about the government mandated extortion I pay every year.

My first morning commute by public transportation was kind of alright. Just takes longer - 65 minutes. (By car it takes me about 20 minutes from my front door to work desk). Now I know how to get to work in case my car is ever stolen in the middle of the night :)

Only two more days to go!

ETA: Just confirmed with my insurance agent that the nine-year mark is the timeline to avoid the accident surcharge. My new premium period actually takes effect on Friday at 12:01am. So, now....

Only ONE more day to go!
