Christian (Private) vs. Public School

Recommended Posts

In line with the previous posts, I think the same applies to a child's life in general. My mother told me that a child's behavioral patterns and character is mostly set by the age of 5. I agree with her. I am so glad that, even though I am divorced, I at least got to be with my oldest child full-time until age 5 and my youngest child until age 3. I honestly believe that without my discipline during those forming years, they would have turned into monsters. The ironic thing is that my ex's family, who believes in virtually zero punishment and spoils their kids, believes that I was actually damaging them and causing them to be fearful. Sure, just like God causes us to be "fearful" when he punishes us (sometimes severely). Sure. And aren't we to model our parenting after God afterall?

Hello Pie!

I believe Christian or other private schools are worth the money! I think all grades are important and worthy of paying the extra money at a private school. It's a sacrifice but I appreciate my parents' sacrifice of $ for my sisters and me to go to private schools. When my hubby and I have kids, we plan on sending them to a private school: either Christian or Jewish. Blessings <3

I understand this, but when they start from $15,000 per year per child there is just a physical impossibility sometimes. This is Australia though, not sure of the prices in the US. Ultimately the school doesn't matter, you're responsible for your own learning. I got good marks because I buckled down and studied my ass off. Going to a private or public school doesn't change that. I've seen people from private schools who can't be bothered and do poorly. Their parents money is wasted. If they study hard they'll do well, regardless of environment.

Hello! Good to see you around :).

Yeah, it adds up. But I bet there is a range of prices, plus scholarships and other ways to provide for the cost.

Can't wait to read a post about you and your hubby sending a little one off to school!! :)

M30, Pie- I have to comment on this. After being seriously grieved for many years and feeling a bit powerless over this matter God spoke to my heart saying, "man thinks he/she can take Me out of the schools and other institutions- but I am there (quotation marks in place for separation purposes, not exact words), man can't take Me out of anything". This gave great peace.

As the days go by doctrinal issues are becoming less important, Gods presence seems to be the priority...peace and love. I'm beginning to wonder if anyone really has the Bible doctrinally correct in all areas.

I went to a Catholic school during the most impressionable years- best experience and set the stage as far as my education.

Wow, so many people attended private school. I'm surprised! I'm glad it was a positive experience during your formative years. The best part is that you've carried a lot of the important teachings with you up to today :).

I'm not sure if we're completely done by age 5, but I do believe that a parent has an extreme amount of influence until about 12. 12 years to raise a child up with instruction, guidance and love. After that, the relationship changes. Parents still have a really important role, but the relationship is different.

To me, that influences how I feel about the role a teacher or a school system would play in a child's life. I think a child is primarily focused on and influenced by his/her own parents during those early years. I'm all about parents having a hands-on attitude about their child's education.

I attended a great public school. I'm actually thankful for this because, when it came time to learn Scripture, I had no significant cultural influences to affect my understanding. Most people are shocked when I discuss with them how many of their views are entirely based on culture rather than Scripture. Oftentimes, Christians outright reject or deny certain basics of Scripture because their societal influence has so strongly molded them against it.

Yes, I think academically, a child who's in the right environment (good family, stable situation) can succeed in public school. No doubt about it. I think some people may send their kids to a private Christian school for more reasons than purely academics, though it plays a major role, I'm sure.

I'm not exactly sure about the prices, but I think there are options that are significantly less than $15,000. Nonetheless, it's still a hefty amount, especially when compared to public (free!).

You've mentioned before that your own kids are learning bible verses. So they are being formed in a Christian environment. How is it different if a child learns about scripture at home vs. at school, in your opinion?

I think it's the same question as what is wrong with American churches as a whole: we teach that Christ is USEFUL to achieve our own goals in life, rather than giving us meaning and satisfaction as an end in himself.

As a non sequitur...

My ex actually criticized me in divorce court for teaching my 5 year old Scripture verses. She said he was too young. And she suggested I was teaching him inappropriate verse, yet, when asked by my lawyer what specific verses or topics I taught him, she suddenly couldnt remember anything. Yet less than a year later she chooses a school for them which teaches them bible verses. Go figure.

If anyone is curious, these are the verses he has memorized to date:

"If you know what is right to do, but you do not do it, you sin."

-James 4:17

"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it..."

-Psalm 24:1

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

-Genesis 1:1

"Man does not live on bread [food] alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."

-Matthew 4:4

"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever."

-Psalm 136:1

"Fear God and keep his commandments."

-Eccl 12:13

That is beyond cute! Love it!! (For that reason, I'll be ignoring the anti-American Christian comment :p:D:p).
