danny8630
::sigh:: , I had a cholasteotoma removed from my middle ear about a year ago. So you don't have to look it up, it is a growth of skin in the middle ear that grows overtime eroding away bones, organs . I feel bad because im only 18 and have about 30% hearing in my left ear. I plugged my good ear with my finger and i couldn't hear the person talking next to me. =(. it makes me feel bad, i may have to get a hearing aid. I guess im just ranting, if anyone has had any experience or knows anyone, im open to comment. Thanks everyone.
Lollsabell
Hi Danny, I have no experience in this, nor do I really know anyone who does (That's not a lot of help to you, I know!) and that if I tried to say anything it would more than likely sound presumptious and stupid. Are there any people in a similar situation you can get in touch with? See how they've coped and so on? I send my love anyway. Take care and hope you get lot of support for this, from friends, family...all the best. Loll
pedens001
Hi there Danny... I am familiar somewhat with what you have but my hearing impairment is different..I was born with no inner ear in my right ear and i had an eardrum that busted in there too that at one point made me completely deaf..but it was restored in one ear so I was lucky.. Also it didn't effect my speech pattern too which was another plus for me..but one downside is I can't get a hearing aid and Im not a candidate for a cochlear implant.. Is it tough hearin only outta one side..yea u bet it is..If you can get a hearing aid use it cuz from what I've read they do work well... Don't let it get to you, there are good sides to it, like I was eligible for Financial Aid from a Vocational Rehab counselor the school sent me too..they give me $$ for tuition and books every semester..not bad at all so check with your counselors if your still in HS about stuff like this..especially if you are in a public school cuz its all govt money they will give u... One thing you should remember is that you can still hear be thankful that you have that, yes it is very irritating having to ask people to speak up..I do it all the time but its a heck of alot better than being totally deaf.. Hope that helps u any if you have any questions feel free to email me
Author danny8630
pedens, thank you for replying. ive had 2 surgeries already on the same ear. one was to remove the growth and the other was a cochlear implant. I did not recieve the gain in hearing which the doctors had claimed. sometimes i wonder if the implant is still attached to where ever it needs to be. Also, i have a constant ringing in my ear, it intensifies when i lower my head down to look for something or lean in a certain way. i question myself whether or not the surgery for improvement was worth it. I think i may end up with a hearing aid either way. thanks again
pedens001
Hmm..thats interesting that it hasn't seemed to work..what do the docs say about that?... As for the ringing in your ears that may be from the surgery..but I get it all the time it happens out of the blue to me I'll just be sittin somewhere or doin somethin and the ringing will kick in for a few mins..I had a bad problem with disorientation for a while too almost a whole year it messed me up it just happened all of a sudden one day...You should also ask your doc to check and make sure you don't have an ear infection that could be causing trouble with that implant..but hey Im not doctor lol.. If you got anymore questions or whatnot feel free to ask me
Author danny8630
i have told the doctor. He says what they all say when something doesnt work..."well, we cant garuantee it to work, however it is successful with most people." And lucky me isnt one of those people i guess, and theres 'nothing more he can do'
pedens001
Well...I hate that its not workin for you...I guess just give it a few days and the ringing should subside...who knows maybe the implant will start to work soon but you never know... Atleast be thankful your not totally deaf that wouldn't be good
tiki
I've had constant ear problems and it runs in my family. My sister had a cholasteotoma that took like 6 hours of surgery to remove. The biggest one the doc had seen. She recently got a hearing aid and is well on her way to hearing us talk about her now.
Author danny8630
i think mine took about 3 hours or so to remove. The recovery was almost unbearable. For about 2 weeks i couldnt chew or twist my neck in a particular way, it was very restricting. I probably lost aroun 10lbs
