Trouble with mother

Today, I had a huge argument with my mother. I just moved back into her house a several months ago and everything went well until she began opening and reading my mail. I confronted her about it and that's when the confrontation took a wrong turn. She's the type of person who doesn't like to admit their faults and instantly became defensive when I asked her. So in turn, I also became defensive. We had a yelling match and it became so terrible that she said "When I die, I don't want you to come to my funeral!" I stood there, crying and stunned. I'm scared to talk to her because I'm afraid that our conversation will end up into another yelling match. I've locked myself in my room and only leave my room to use the bathroom. I hate the tension between her and I. Any suggestions on how to deal with this?

You didn't say how old you are - but given that you moved back into her house I assume you're an adult(?).

I would say she got so defensive because she knew what she was doing was wrong. If you're an adult she has absolutely no business opening your mail. I would be extremely pissed off about that too.

Having an adult relationship with your parents can be difficult. I guess you realise that yelling & shouting doesn't help. You should refuse to rise to her if she becomes defensive & starts yelling. Speak to her calmly & keep your emotions in check. Tell her that you want to have an adult, calm & rational conversation about it & insist that she respects your privacy. If she can't do that then, in your shoes, I would leave.

That's just silly. I'm sure she didn't mean it.
