MelodyJ Posted November 15, 2004 Share Posted November 15, 2004 As I embark on the new life I am envisioning before me, I have been thinking about things I want to do for myself. I am considering taking voice lessons to refresh my vice, and looking into a casual band to do local parties, or bars, nothing much, just for fun. I used to sing along time ago, and gave it up for family. That is fine, but the desire has never left me. Every once in a while I will sit in with a band and I have so much fun. The question is, am I too old to do this now? I am 42, but look 32 and feel 22! Two of my teens say go for it, the other just looked at me and said "why?". I feel like if I don't do it now, it will never happen. Would yo be embarrassed to have your mom in a rock band? Link to post Share on other sites

I think you're less marketable at an older age, but if you're just doing it for yourself, nothing should stop you. Would yo be embarrassed to have your mom in a rock band? Again, it depends. I'm sure she wouldn't hesitate to join a rock band, but I suspect they would only perfrom at masses on Sunday. Your age is no barrier. I have no interest in joining a band, but I took up the piano a few months ago & am enjoying it immensely. I have been enrolled to perform at a music festival in February. yikes! They have a category for novice adults - how kind - & how necessary! I've gone to a few recitals put on by piano instructors in my local community & some of those kids out there are truly gifted. Go for it! Singing is great fun - you'll have a blast & it will keep you young (and I imagine your social life will get a great boost too). Link to post Share on other sites

bluetuesday Posted November 17, 2004 Share Posted November 17, 2004 I am considering taking voice lessons to refresh my vice i agree. vices should be refreshed wherever possible. and all parents are embarrassing. it's the law. i'd be pretty embarrassed if my mum was in a rock band but then, i know her. it wouldn't be pretty. she's 63 and tone deaf. you're only 42. hardly drawing your pension. if you want to sing, sing. don't let the opinion of little people who are going to cringe at you anyway get in your way. Yes, I am going to do it, my 14 yr old said it is cool and he will practice with me, he plays the guitar! No, I don't think I will be preforming at there school, or anywhere else they might hang out, have to be the cool mom still, no embarassment. I embarass them enough when I go on campus, my daughter said I'm the campus MILF, and proud as she is, it is gross! So, I have been banned from highschool! Kids are great!!!! She and two others are hilarious and easily draw local crowds... Oh, one of the two others also acts in lots of local plays...she's easily 50s... you should hear their sthick about middle age women, menopause, raising children, and also just the good ol' rock and roll they do. My teacher thinks the local choir to start off with or an operatic society. Of course, I want to audition for the best choir in the Region but I seem to have forgotten how to read music. Of course, I want to audition for the best choir in the Region but I seem to have forgotten how to read music. i sang with the cbso chorus for a couple of years, meanon. boy, your sight singing has really got to be sh*t hot, let alone your ability to read music. but if you've done it before you can always get back up to speed. there's very little more blissful than singing in a huge concert hall, divine orchestra before you, pounding out the glorious strains of mahler 8. Did you tour? I've a long way to go to get to that standard. I'm re-starting from scratch though it will be quicker second time around. Never mind the sight singing, my voice and vocal range needs work. It's like driving, when you get the knack it's subconscious but at first it's impossible to remember everything: Italian pronunciation melody harmony stand up straight don't lock your knees stay still breath from your diaphragm keep your tongue flat sing from the back of the throat relax the jaw higher pitch, larger breath blend the sound pour it out it should be no effort at all Link to post Share on other sites

Did you tour? thanks meanon. yeah i toured a bit. went to rotterdam for a couple of concerts with the conductor mark elder, did the salzburg festival with simon rattle, sang beethoven 9 at the opening of the proms, stuff like that. they only do one or two major tours a year, it's mostly symphony hall gigs. after i left they went to sydney! missed out on that one. it was amazing but the rehearsal schedule was pretty uncompromising. don't lock your knees is HUGE. the temptation is almost overwhelming. and it being no effort is the biggest lie they ever tell you. i had years of opera training (after the cbso). if you're not completely exhausted after a 90 minute lesson you're doing something wrong. you can still bounce eggs off my diaphragm. I am just a plain old, belt it out, rock n roll lover. I have a good, loud, strong voice for never having lessons, I can do a good Pat Benatar, but I am really excited to find out what range I may be able to achieve after some real instruction.
