pinkie
How long (ideally) should it take for somebody to be able to walk a mile comfortably. Without being out of breath, wanting to stop, etc... How many times a week? Thanks.
tman666
Hopefully not long... but everyone starts somewhere.
joe86
I think getting exercise at least 3 times a week is best. As for walking, I go on my rest days from running & average about a 20minute mile.

xxoo
I think everyone physically capable should walk every day. My children were able to walk a mile comfortably around age 4 or so, and my parents still walk comfortably at 70. Humans were built to walk long distances. If you are currently unable to walk a mile comfortably, start with daily walks that are comfortable for you, do that for a week, and try adding another 5 minutes of daily walking the next week, and so on. Eventually, try to do 40 minutes of walking daily, which is a comfortable 2 miles for the average person. If you feel pain when walking, please visit a doctor first.
creighton0123
Unless you are morbidly obese (and I mean that as a pure classification of body weight and fitness level), one should be able to work up to walking at a 3mph pace for a straight mile without stopping in two to three weeks barring any existing injuries.

Mascara
A mile isn't that far. It's a spot half a mile away that you walk to - there and back. And half a mile is nothing at all. That's the best way to think of it - in small chunks. I walk 4 miles daily, averaging about 18 minutes per mile. And that's not pushing very hard. Before you know it, that one-mile walk will feel too short.
Eternal Sunshine
Do you have any health conditions including obesity? If not maybe you should get checked out. It's hard for me to imagine that a healthy person can't walk a mile comfortably.
Mascara
Went on a 7 mile walk today, half of it uphill, so that brings up another point - terrain. For the first mile it was tough going and I did stop once. On the flat, you should walk a mile without needing to stop (barring disability)

TintedChrome
In my outdoor clubs we usually move 6 km/h on smooth ground. According to my HAL 9000 computer that's 16 minutes per mile. I'm 45 and 200 pounds.
PogoStick
Yeah a 20 min mile is pretty average. 25 mins is leisurely. 15 mins is walking quickly with purpose but shouldn't throw off your biomechanics. You should be able to walk a full 3 miles in 60 minutes with minor fatigue. 4 miles in 60 and it's reasonable to start feeling moderate fatigue in your legs through the 2nd half.
