ShyOne82
Mine is going to be a long one as I just started couple days ago. I put on a ton of weight ever since I moved to Florida and lost all my confidence. Had a few health scares, PVC, which I believe is weight related. Although I hate my body, my motivation is to get healthier... maybe that would help me stay on track as opposed to worrying about losing inches and pounds every day... I need to hide my scale lol If anyone out there wants to join me on this journey, feel free. I need all the motivation I can get! This is the biggest I've ever been.. so tired of hiding behind clothes in a warm environment... and tired of the heart palpitations. I try to stay active, and I dont eat after 7:30.. if i get really hungry I eat a grapefruit or something very light. Any helpful tips? If you are overweight and serious about losing weight.. lets do this together!!
tman666
Just wanted to say congratulations on making the decision to change your life for the better! As far as tips go: it depends on how overweight you are as to what types of things you should be shooting for. If you're severely overweight and out of shape, my guess is that your main focus should be lifestyle based changes that will lead to normalizing your weight. These changes need to be sustainable in the long term. Specific, short term diets will only yield short term results, as will short term training programs. Think of it sort of like a pyramid. The base of the pyramid is formed by your broad, long-term lifestyle choices. At the top of the pyramid, you have specific diet strategies, training strategies, supplements, etc. Without a solid base, the top falls. Basically-don't get sucked into thinking that there are any "magic pills" or programs that will circumvent the need for solid, long-term lifestyle changes. Unfortunately, most of the fitness industry revolves around selling this notion. The sustainability of the changes you make needs to be a priority. If you are hungry all of the time, there's no way you're going to be able to stick with your goals. A common mistake is to scale back your caloric intake too far back too fast. If you've grown accustomed to eating 3,000 calories per day and you suddenly drop it to 1,200, you're chances of being able to stick with it long term are greatly diminished. Your mindset shouldn't be "I'm dieting", but rather "this is how I eat from now on". One thing you mentioned in your post about not eating after 7:30 p.m.: there's no science that supports that eating late at night promotes fat gain or hinders fat loss. Your overall caloric intake and your nutrient breakdown are the key factors. Timing of nutrients can play a minor role for people who are already pretty lean, but for overweight people, the main focus should to be on calories and smart macro nutrient choices. As such, I encourage you to eat when it suits you. If that's 3 larger meals a day, great. If that's 6 small meals spread out throughout the day, that works too. Just find something that works for you and enables to you to hit your caloric/macronutrient goals for the day. With regards to exercise: if you're inactive, get active. It sounds like you're already at least trying to stay active. Making choices such as taking the stairs, walking more, etc. are good starts. My personal opinion is that gym sessions supervised by a qualified trainer could help immensely as well, in that putting on muscle mass will help you burn more calories throughout the day. My opinion is that people with a lot of excess weight to lose shouldn't be running in order to preserve their joints. Walking, swimming, cycling, and supervised weight training make better choices. All of this stuff is just my humble opinion. It might be worth it to you to seek the advice of professionals. Best of luck to you! I hope you find something that works for you. Don't settle for going through life hating your body.
InBloom
I definitely want to make a change from out-of-shape to in-shape. I'm not too overweight but definitely out of shape. To look at me, some say i'm skinny but i'm not toned at all and have flab to burn for sure in my stomach area, buns and chest. I really, really, really want to get stronger. That's my goal. To get stronger and more flexible. As it is, i'm an achey/stiff morning guy, I always feeling so stiff and unflexible. Not a Get-Up-And-Go person at all. I don't want that anymore. I have a weak back because all I do is sit at my desk job and have never ever been on a strengthening/exercising kick, well, ever in my life. I really really want to change myself for the better. I've never been 'ripped' and would love to have a fighting chance at achieving a better body. I generally eat very healthy, my weakness is Ice Cream though, I just need to incorporate the exercise now and stick with it. So, i'm with ya! joe86
My ex and I basically let each other get lazy after we did a 10k run together. Now I'm single I want to drop weight to be more like the shape I was in at uni when I played American football. As a techie I use my phone & invested in a fitbit pedometer to motivate my exercise. I'm running every other day and try to get out for a walk on my rest days in between, it's been about 2 weeks so far and I've dropped 3 to 4 pounds already so I'm quite happy with myself about that! If I can do this, so can you
ASG
I've been on a weight loss journey for over a year now. It's been slow, but kinda steady! I have tried the strict diet thing and it didn't work for me. I lost the weight, but I would get fed up with it, start eating regularly again and put it all back on. Didn't work. Now I've basically changed my eating habits. It means a slower weight loss, but I am now closer to my goal weight than ever before. Maybe in a year I'll be there?

Author ShyOne82
Best of luck to you! I hope you find something that works for you. Don't settle for going through life hating your body. Thank you sooo much for the advice.. it really helped. For exercise I started Turbo Jam and alternating cardio and weight training. The reason why I chose to stop eating heavily after 7:30 pm is because I tend to over eat at night (junk food) and then go to sleep. I am used to going to bed with a full stomach and I believe that can contribute to weight gain. Two years ago I lost 20 pounds not eating after 7. By that I mean a full course meal. I ate something light such as yogurt or fruit if i stayed up late and got hungry. Hopefully I can be consistent this time. Thanks for your post.

I have alot of weight to lose.... 60 pounds.. and a wedding to go to in 9 months.. you think I can achieve this???? I hope and pray. As for you, I really don't know much about gaining muscle.. I assume you would have to increase your protein intake and do alot of weight training of course... P90X sounds good or a gym. I hate gyms now.. I recently cancelled my membership... those 30 mins on an elliptical feels like 2 hours. Got bored. Anyways, keep in touch ok? And give me the update on your progress. Hope you had a good day.

Author ShyOne82
Now I've basically changed my eating habits. It means a slower weight loss, but I am now closer to my goal weight than ever before. Maybe in a year I'll be there? Are you over 40 years old? A years worth of eating healthy and exercise should give dramatic results... right? I only asked your age because I'm guessing age can slow down weight loss.. Hey, I've lost weight so many times but never stuck to the lifestyle change. Exercise and eating right should get you where u need to be in a year. I should be giving myself this advice. LOL. Also, I don't exercise. I'm too lazy for that. So I rely only on my diet change.

Turbo Jam is cool if u dont like the gym. Everyone is doing Insanity, but it a lil too instense.. I'll try that when I get closer to my ideal weight.
clia
I love Chalene Johnson! She really makes working out fun. I've done Turbo Fire and Chalean Extreme, but haven't done Turbo Jam. I alternate those with Insanity now. Definitely a good idea to hold off on that one into you get into better shape -- it's really intense. Good luck!

maidai
Well I just hit 40 last week and was determined I was not hitting it massively overweight! I use to be an excercise addict but badly broke my ankle 13 years ago and I mean badly! Over the years I put on about 6 stone. 5 has now gone in the past 20 months and I was lucky that I did nothing other than split with my long term partner. He was the cook and use to cook massive meals and with my work hours I would end up eating nothing all day and then a large meal at night. I had a new relationship where we were out and about all the time aswell, that recently broke down and the famous break up diet helped me shift another 10 pound without trying Ideally I would still like to lose another 2 stone but now I am having to work for it and mostly need to tone up. Have recently started hill walking, swimming, circuit training and cycling so fingers crossed. Good luck to all! I feel a million dollars and hit 40 more confident than I had been in years!
atomicdog
The hardest thing for me is to turn down food/drink on social occasions where it seems to be practically mandatory. I usually cave in a drink/eat to excess. I wish there was a way of attending these events while politely declining to drink to excess. Maybe I'm just hanging with the wrong kind of people. Life is about balance, and I also never turn down a drink with friends. This is especially hard just after a BU like I've had in the last month because its what I think is best to do. You just have to make sure you exercise has hard as you socialise!
