I used to be more aggressive and have things to talk about, but if I don't get a signal from a woman then I don't know where to lead the conversation. Someone give me a primer on this to sharpen my tools again. I want to be more naturally flirty. I'm not a bad communicator overall or shy. I just feel I could do better at flirting.

It's sort of a way to say that you like the person, but you're going to play a little bit to pretend you don't. The benefit of flirting is it is usually innocuous in that if the other person doesn't reciprocate, not much is lost. The key to flirting is very light hearted banter designed to break down barriers and find out more about the person usually by making them laugh.
