Antidepressants increase diabetes risk

Recommended Posts

Very poor article.

The article doesn't even discuss any specific mechanism by which the drugs would cause diabetes, other than promoting weight gain.

No drug, not even steroids, cause weight gain without the consumption of excessive calories.

Diet is the overwhelming factor. All others are simply correlations, not causes.

A lot of depressed people overeat so it's interesting that when they take antidepressants they obviously still overeat and gain weight.

Overeating is not really a symptom of depression itself. When in a depressed state, someone who overeats probably already has a tendency to 'eat their emotions' as they say.

There is also much more to it than just overeating.

One of the signs of depression is loss in interests. Let's forget the part where it can take years for a first depression to be diagnosed - starting medication doesn't make the sun shine instantly. It can take months for a doctor and a patient to find the right prescription, then it will take 4 to 6 months for the medication to be fully effective and another 6 months to a year for the patient to be significantly better.

So this means someone can be off regular training for months, up to a year.

It's kind of like one blaming their weight gain on having kids, quitting smoking etc etc etc when all the person needs to do is regulate the number of calories in and calories out.

It is very rare that someone will eat well, exercise regularly and end up fat - medication or not.
