BK Girl
So I've been wanting to try running but am not quite sure how to go about it since I have asthma. It's not quite severe asthma but it always seems to get triggered by activities such as running (when I walk my dog in the mornings I always make sure I give him a quick jog for a couple of blocks). A lot of what I've read so far says to start off slow, like jogging for 15 minutes but to me that seems just about impossible. Anyone else have asthma and run? I would love some tips on how to get started with this. Thanks!
tiki
See your doctor or pulmonologist. They should advise you of whether or not you can start a new exercse regimen. Have them do a test to check your lung capacity. You may be in no shape to partake in strenous exercise. My finace has 60% lung capacity right now with his asthma. See what I mean? Yep - talk to a doctor.
Queen B
Hey I've played sports for years and just lately because I've switched to a fall season instead of spring I've found it hard really to breathe in the cold air and after sports I was feeling really drowsy & short of breath...the Doctor says it's Sports induced asthma and I get shport of breath and drowsiness from lack of oxygen. Go figure. Anyway there are a few other girls on the team with asthma and we're all on inhalers or puffers. I have a long acting one to help prevent things from closing off (I take it twice a day) and a quick acting on for the days when the first one isn't enough. These seem to do the trick for me. Of course, if you haven't been running or even walking for a whil you could just be out of shape...only your doctor will be able to tell you for sure.
moimeme
Don't ever take medical advice for something like this from strangers on the internet. Talk to a real live doctor in person.
izzybelle
moimeme's right, definitely talk to your dr. first. my kids and i all have asthma (mild) that's either sports, cold air, or allergy induced. what we've done (at our dr.'s suggestion) is use an inhaler about 15 minutes before any activity that could be a trigger. i use it before i skate and for the few times that i've forgotten, i've been very, very sorry! works for the kids too, but getting them to remember ahead of time is a challenge! BUT each situation is different so talk to your doc FIRST!!!!!
