My mom tells me "Why do I need it?" when I told her my cell phone company a prepaid company finally has the iPhone. But her way of thinking is if your current phone or tv or radio etc. Works 100% fine and can just get a new battery then "why do you need a new one?" So that made me think for a second "why do I need a new phone?" well not only do I want it but then again she is right why do I need it? My current phone works fine. Another example is my TV I still have an old TV with the big back and VCR/DVD combo and it still works fine after having it for so many years. I don't need a new TV right now.

So I ask you all this "why do we need it" when it comes to certain items? Do we really need it or can we live without it or hold onto the current item?

Save your money and invest it. TVs, cell phones, iPods - they all get outdated within 6mos or a year. You don't need the coolest gadgets on the market, it makes you happy for a few weeks and then you'll want something else.

Spend as little money as possible on material wants and save your cash to invest in a business or something that will make your money grow.

I've never been big on material things. I've had the same cell phone for four years and some people look at me like I have 3 heads when they see it.

It depends. I am usually behind technologically, but I will upgrade if it's more economical, raises the efficiency of my daily life, or provides a worthwhile experience.

For instance, I was using a candy bar phone with Verizon 2 years ago, but decided to upgrade to a smartphone with PagePlus - which uses the same network as Verizon. The phone was a used older generation model that someone upgrading handed down to me; one can get it on eBay for $70. Now, instead of paying Verizon $50/month for voice only, I pay $30/month to PagePlus with no extra taxes and fees for voice/text/data and the same network. The smartphone makes my life so much more efficient. Instead of calling/leaving voicemails, I can now leave text messages. I can check the weather, sports scores, e-mail, fantasy football stats, subway status, maps, set alarms, browse the web, organize my schedule instantly.

Last Black Friday, I purchased a new 40" LED HDTV from Best Buy for $215. Unlike the thousand idiots waiting all day and night at the local store, I just went online in the afternoon and bought it from the comfort of my own home. After calibrating it myself, the picture quality is now on par with a higher-end brand like Samsung. It was worth it to me since I am a huge basketball and football fan and now I can watch the games in HD, and invite my friends over to watch as well.
