The vaccine is aimed at combating type 1 diabetes - the most serious form of the condition which usually strikes the under-40s. Testing is due to begin in August. The human trial heralds one of the biggest advances in tackling diabetes since the introduction of insulin prescription in the 1920s and has been hailed by experts as a "major potential pathway to a cure".
