Just be the best you can be as long as you're being yourself. I hate it when people try to fake being nice. You cannot ruin somebody's life unless they allow you to. When I've heard people use that word to describe how a person has affected them, it usually has a good connotation to it. Are you sure they're not just jealous or something? You cannot ruin somebody's life unless they allow you to. Truer words were never spoken - try taking this one to heart.
