AnyaNova
Since it has been noted on other threads here, that women usually tend to only go to gyms to do cardio, guys, would you tend to assume that a woman there using the weights (I've observed my personal trainer enough that some of the machines I know I can safely use) were lesbians? I mean, I suspect that most guys of the type I'm into would not tend to hang too much in gyms, but you never know, and though I definitely want the increased fat-burning weight loss (I've just started personal training and dedicated working out, and its really starting to have a big effect in a good way) provided by the weight training, I also don't want people to assume things about me that aren't the case. Nothing wrong with lesbians going to the gym to get pumped, you guys rock and I wish I had your confidence! I'm just, not one. :-)
NGC1300
No, I would not assume a woman is a lesbian for using weights. Resistance training is beneficial for everyone.
KatZee
0_o Why would a guy assume a woman is a lesbian? Do all lesbians look like men to you? Some do, and some remain very dainty and feminine. Just like some straight girls are dainty, and other straight girls prefer to be powerhouses. It has nothing to do with your sexual orientation. I do CrossFit and I'm pretty muscular for a female. And tons of the girls in the gym look like absolute BEASTS. They don't get a weird eye by any of the guys there, only pushed harder and then given fist pumps or high-fives. I was there today and I had stopped for a breather and a guy was like, "I don't think you're breathing hard enough, keep going!" Your issue with working out is your insecurity, that's not how people view you. Edited November 25, 2013 by KatZee

No. In fact, I wasn't assuming that all lesbians look like men at all. I am very feminine looking (at least since I lost the weight), yet wondered while I was doing some weight lifting, if guys would think that about me, despite looking quite feminine. My fear had less to do with looks and how guys perceive women looking, and assumptions about behavior (lifting weights as opposed to cardio). To be fair, some insecurities of my own may play into it. The gym really still reminds me of junior high (probably because that is the last time I was in one before this), and many junior high taunts. It is good to know, though, that men wouldn't assume that about me. I am a little insecure about my body, because I have just lost a lot of weight. So that could play into it as well. KatZee
No, guys are not going to think you're a lesbian. They're gong to think you're either super into working out, or not all that into it. That's it.
EasyHeart
I assume all women are lesbians.
Shepp
Only if she looked like a lesbian but happened to be working out, the same as if she looked like a lesbian but happened to be grocery shopping. The weights alone wouldn't make or break my opinion.
Sunshinegrl
No. They admire it and highly appreciate a fit, tone woman. They are called goddesses to men.
radiodarcy
I doubt it. I probably have people assume I'm a lesbian because I wear men's clothing when I work out. But they tend to run cheaper than women's work out clothes. The other reason I wear men's clothing is because I tend to be modest and feel more "covered" and therefore comfortable in baggy men's shirts and long shorts than in clingy spandex and tank tops It doesn't really bother me if I'm perceived to be a lesbian though. if anything I probably don't get noticed at all; which I'm ok with. Most of the time I prefer being invisible at the gym anyway

thefooloftheyear
No one will think you are a lesbian and you wouldnt normally get "jacked" by using free weights... In fact, you will get WAY more bang for your buck" in terms of your overall look from weight training than anything else you can do.....period.. And one other thing...Beware of so called "personal trainers"....Most of the ones I see today wouldn't know the first thing about getting anyone into real shape and conditioning..I dont know everything, but I can say for sure that I can do a better job than all of the trainers at my particular gym..They are doing it all wrong... Good Luck TFY
Esoteric Elf
I am highly surprised to see women descend to weights, as it is a very rare occurence, so I am more standing in shock rather than concern of her sexual orientation. I assume all women are lesbians. Wow, that was left field...though I do note a point here.
Phoe
I lift weights but have never had anyone make even the remotest assumption about my sexual orientation, nor have I ever even THOUGHT that any man who sees me with barbell might think I am lesbian. This is the first time I've ever heard someone suggest a connection, so I am apt to believe that it is most likely not something people are thinking about.
Jmk21
Lol no I have never thought that about a women lifting weights at the gym I go to. When I see a girl lifting I see it as just one more thing we have in common actually. Gay straight BI I really don't care. Their sexual preference has no bearing on myself
Author AnyaNova
Okay. I realized it was probably just a stupid fear. I guess it ran like this. Weights are often seen as a more masculine endeavor, women who do more masculine endeavors in this society (often, not always) are unfairly questioned and often referred to as such (at least in the midwest backwoodsy areas I've spent most of my life in, unfortunately), and so I just was curious. Good to know the answer is probably not!
Andy_K
If I see a woman using weights, the only assumption I make is that she's probably more dedicated/educated about exercise than the vast majority of other girls who go to the gym.

Good to know the answer is probably not! This is more reasonable question. I can see how in more conservative societies more masculine behaviour traits would raise eyebrows. I enjoy taking on exercise in a masculine way, I train more like a man and I take the changes in my body/walk/running style/etc with it. It's something you either embrace or you don't. I'm proud of it because I like feeling strong but I'm still just 5'6'' and about 134 lbs not exactly butch, but pretty fit. Everyone has feminine and masculine qualities, it's up to you what mix you are comfortable with and how much you care about those that try to stop you from getting out of your little box. jimloveslips
Jesus what's wrong with women nowdays. Why are you so concerned about what others think? Who cares? Ah, watched any tv lately? Facebooked? Twittered twattered? I'm not saying it's right, but that's where most people get there ideas of fashion and body image from... Just take the Kim K West uproar over her "nude" video (NO WAY is that her by the way) - truly awful role models for both sexes, and ethnicities... but obviously from the ridiculous amount of money they make, pop image icons.
