jimloveslips
We don't actually know that science can explain existence. We only assume that it can. It's done a pretty good job so far. Why are you making personal attacks Huh? Just because I disagree with you, that's a personal attack?
Robert Z
It's done a pretty good job so far. That isn't proof or evidence. It only shows that we have models that are accurate within their domain. But when we try to merge Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity, they conflict. Unless we can unify the theories of physics to produce one consistent model, we don't know if what we have are exact, or just good approximations of the nature of space, time, and matter, or if the models ultimately fail, which seems to be the case. For all that we know, we have missed critical pieces of the puzzle that would change everything. It is also possible that we have fundamental problems with our approach that will never be resolved. Consider for example that in Quantum Mechanics, we assume that space is homogeneous and isotropic everywhere. We don't know that. Consider that we thought we had most of the picture twenty years ago, and then we discovered that we had missed about 80% of the universe - dark energy and dark matter. That is like announcing mission accomplished while the enemy is bombing your house. We see accelerations without any known cause, which seems to violate the conservation of energy principle. We call it dark energy but we don't know what it is. We simply gave it a name. Huh? Just because I disagree with you, that's a personal attack? You accused me of hypocrisy and insincerity just because you didn't understand the argument, which happens to be correct.
Robert Z
Here is one of the deepest mysteries of all. We have what are known as the physical constants characteristic impedance of vacuum electric constant magnetic constant Newtonian constant of gravitation Newtonian constant of gravitation over h-bar c Planck constant Planck constant in eV s Planck constant over 2 pi Planck constant over 2 pi in eV s Planck constant over 2 pi times c in MeV fm Planck length Planck mass Planck mass energy equivalent in GeV Planck temperature Planck time speed of light in vacuum No competing theory of everything, less one extreme outlier suggested by a physicist named Heim, even attempts to predict these values. We don't even know if there is a reason why they have these specific values. But here's where it gets interesting. Were any of these values to vary by even a small amount, atoms could not exist. The universe would be a place without form. So, are these values somehow forced by the nature of the Big Bang, or by something else, or, in the most incredible accident in the history of the universe, did they all just happen to come out to be precisely the values needed so that structured matter can exist? We just don't know. There is one hypothesis that says that's universes are constantly bubbling up in a hyper-complex multiverse of universes, where the values of the physical constants are simply random. But every once in a while, against all incalculable odds, a universe emerges where all of the values are just right, and the universe can have form - atoms and molecules and stars and life. In fact we would expect there to be an infinite number of universes that could produce life. After all, there has already been an infinite amount of time for them all to be born. Or, maybe God did it. Edited December 11, 2013 by Robert Z
TheFinalWord
Im losing my faith in God. Today, i just got tired of believing. That is actually pretty common. There have been many periods in my life that I felt God was far away and what am I believing for. The fact you're struggling with this, suggest you are experiencing what many of faith go through on a regular basis. God was invented to explain mystery. God is always invented to explain those things that you do not understand. Now, when you finally discover how something works, you get some laws which you're taking away from God; you don't need him anymore. But you need him for the other mysteries. So therefore you leave him to create the universe because we haven't figured that out yet; you need him for understanding those things which you don't believe the laws will explain, such as consciousness, or why you only live to a certain length of time- life and death- stuff like that. God is always associated with those things that you do not understand. Mathematics helps us to model the universe. Does math cause anything? Or does it simply describe? Math Professor DESTROYS Atheist - YouTube God is associated with things we do not understand, even if you believe. Believe me questions don't go away. For example, why didn't Mary leave us a gospel on how to raise the perfect child? Question #1: Why won't God heal amputees? If you believe in the bible, the appropriate question is "When will God heal amputees", not "Why not". The bible states the lame will walk when God restores the earth. “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Jesus healed the paralyzed. The issue here is "why not right now!" Whether its amputees or some other physical ailment, if you live long enough you are going to have a health problem. If you view this world as a training ground you will not see these handicaps as forces to hold you down, but trials (albeit difficult) to overcome. I have a friend in a wheel chair who is living a very productive life. He is also a Christian and gets annoyed that people use his condition as "evidence" God does not exist. He has stated honestly, that if he could go back he would not change his life in any way. He is also getting married to a beautiful woman soon. So the second question is: Why are there so many starving people in our world? Research this: Is there enough food in the world to end starvation? Report back and let us know if it is God's fault or man's fault. Third question: Why does God demand the death of so many innocent people in the Bible? Look up these verses: The homosexual death commandment comes up a lot. I would like you to research and find out how many homosexuals were executed under this law. You can report the number to us and then we will get into the details of each case. Question #4: Why does the Bible contain so much anti-scientific nonsense? You have a college degree, so you know what I'm talking about. You know how science works. You happily use the products of science every day: your car, your cell phone, your microwave oven, your TV, your computer. These are all products of the scientific process. You know that science is incredibly important to our economy and to our lives. Actually, most people do not know how science works. Taking a college degree does not mean a person has any real understanding of science. Most people just know they push a button, flip a knob, stick in a key and it goes. They enjoy the benefits of science, but they don't understand it. - God did not create the world in 6 days 6,000 years ago like the Bible says. 6,000 years was developed by Bishop Ussher. The bible does not lay out the years like that. The rest of these you can see both sides for by doing a bit more digging. PM me if you would like specific links. Author Shaine
Sorry if i seem fickle minded. I found my faith again. I had doubts before if God is real. It's funny how i realized God must be real. I googled many things, how god is not real and how he is bad and is okay with children being killed. I read about how God punished 42 children/lads for teasing Elisha for being bald. God sent 2 bears to kill those children. Many people were arguing how God is not good and he is not merciful and if he is good, how can he kill those children just for teasing Elisha. And i just thought, well, He is God. He created us. He has every right to take life. He is just. He has the right to punish people. He is like our master. We are sand. He is the shepherd and we are the lost sheep. Maybe it's not 42 children, maybe it's not just 2 bears, but how odd it may seem, i found my faith again in this story. when i lost my faith and decided God is not real, i felt lost too. And now that i found my faith again and realize that God is not my bestfriend but my creator and master, i feel like im on the right path again.
Haydn
God was just a great marketing trick to stop people going mad! Oh i am sure Jesus existed but he asked all the right questions and came a cropper due to a massive admin error.
Robert Z
The idea of a god is common to probably most cultures throughout history. No one needed to sell this idea. It seems to arise as a function of being human. So it begs the question: Is god a common concept because of our need to understand the world around us? And most people in the sciences leap to the conclusion in the affirmative. However, it seems to me that this could also be a manifestation of some deeper awareness. If there is some grand consciousness then, as we are told by many religions, we can easily imagine that we might have some sense of this fundamental cosmic connection. So this too could explain why most cultures develop religious beliefs.
Debanked
Awe, come on, nobody referenced rant on God and religion!? It's a classic. I mean, it's at least as good as some "Yahoo! Answers" explanation, and quite educational for the youngsters here. Enjoy! BTW, was raised Catholic, married Lutheran and learned to think for myself. One of the funniest things I've ever read about religion was from The Onion. It was about how the Holy Ghost was phased out by the Catholic church due to budget cuts. Got a kick out of that one! Shaine, I know this is a few weeks late, I saw your post and I had to chime in. It seems to me you had some problems with the old testament. Believe me its not an easy read and if your not familiar with context and culture of those times it might appear that God is Cruel, but he isnt. He is loving but he is just as well. The best example that skeptics tend to use is the killings of the caananites (men, women and children). What skeptics wont tell you is that these men and women were doing child sacrifices to their pagan Gods, they were murdering their children. God didnt just pronounce judgment on them in 1 few days or even a few years. He was patient enough with their sins to the point of waiting 400 years for them to change their evil ways. This is God's patience. Now as far as the children, try to look at it from a long term perspective. Imagine if those kids were allowed to grow up, they would have grown up just as their parents did, made the same child sacrifices their parents did and live in the same wicked manner as their parents did. The key question here is to ask yourself, are those children in hell or heaven, and if they are in heaven dont you think thats a good thing in the long run. Gods whole plan throughout the bible was to prepare the way for his son the messiah, Christ. I also think you would benefit from research a very infamous relic that most atheists hate called the shroud of Turin. It is one of the most studied objects on this earth by scientists, historians, art experts and textile experts. You will definitely be amazed by it as I have studied it for almost 5 years now. Here is one of the best blogs on the shroud here The Shroud of Turin great video presentation by a doctor that is in constant email touch with the sturp experts that have studied the shroud first hand. and another by Professor Gary Habermas If you have any questions at all about the shroud just ask and ill try my best to answer them Shaine. God bless bippy
