Recommended Posts

Please i dont need information on starvation mode etc - as i have spoken with a physician and done research. really just interested in anyone elses experiences with VLCD. thank you.

Sorry but very low calorie diets are stupid in my opinion. You wind up losing all your muscle and it's completely unsustainable, so when you do start eating again, you gain all fat back and you're worse off than before you started with a destroyed metabolism.

Muscle is where it's at. Work at gaining muscle, eating healthy, and moderate cardio and you will look and feel fantastic.

Um you said you're taking in 500 calories a day, which is less than half of what this link stated as being typical for a woman.

I don't know if it's safe or not. All I know is what I read somewhere a long time ago...when your daily intake drops below 800 calories you need to increase your protein to 70 grams a day.

I hope you're getting enough.

thank you :) yes i am. the article is about starvation mode not being what people think it is. a VLCD is categorized as a diet 500 - 1000 calories per day. thank you for your reply.

Losing weight is easier than maintaining it. What will you do when you've lost the weight? You need a plan and you will need to follow it or all this starvation will be a waste of time.

Ever notice how a lot of fat people dont eat very much while skinny/fit people eat like crazy?

They(low calorie starvation diets) dont work in the the real world...In fact, eating(the proper foods) is the only true way to significant and lasting weight loss..At 210 lbs man in my 40's with very low bf% I dont gain any fat, despite a 5,000 calorie/day intake of good clean food...

Eating food isnt your problem.....

Having been very active ever since high school and college, and, after trying numerous workouts and regimes, I am convinced that you will find ways that work for you and learn to trust what you body is telling you as you become more and more attuned to what it needs. As you workout, you will breakdown muscle tissues (micro-tears) which, after eating and sleeping will repair stronger and stronger, and, as you continue this process, your body adapts to the environments you put it through naturally. I’ve, seen, heard, felt and experienced the fact that your body becomes so good at this, that, it eventually becomes productive to change your workout every so often, so that you continue to shock it into developing in ways you want. Maybe you can make an analogy of learning a new skill, where at first, you are very unskilled, but, after a while it gradually becomes more and more natural until you can do it without thinking. Take riding or bike or driving as examples. Your body does these things naturally. Progressive increases in intensity and duration will be necessary to move forward as well as changing routines to fit your new goals as you create them, and you may find yourself getting closer and closer to what it is you want. Unsurprisingly, the diet and amount of sleep will also be indicative of how quickly you will be able to recover from your workouts, and, there will be things that will be more productive to reaching these goals noticeably. Eating too low a calories diet has never been productive for me personally. Rather, eating healthier foods has been, and you may have to experiment with different ways that work for you.

Is that even healthy?

There are probably starving Ethiopians that consume more than you do.

A myth on both counts. Fat people don't eat in front of other people, they binge at night. A formerly fat friend told me this. She also shopped at different supermarkets because she didn't want people knowing how much she ate. I work with someone who had gastric bypass, lost hundreds of pounds, but she ate around it and is as fat as ever. She eats rice cakes, drinks water, has a small salad every day. That is what we see her eat. Someone saw her at a high end grocery store piling up the shopping cart.

Some skinny people stay that way because they watch what they eat. They may have the occasional binge but it's a drop in the bucket when averaged out over a period of time. My ex barely ate anything for breakfast and lunch but piled on the food for dinner. When socializing with others for dinner, that is what people saw, "How can you eat so much and stay so thin?" He also played tennis.

With all due respect...You are not really correct

I am sure some binge...but there are plenty of people that are truly heavy and do not eat much food...Certainly not 40,000 calories a week like I do..If what you are saying is correct, then I should be a 400 lb fat slob, no?

The choices may be poor and some actually make good choices, but in reality some people have metabolic problems...Might be endocrine related or whatever..The bottom line is this theory works EVERY time..I helped two guys lose a combined 125 lbs this past summer by following this advice..Both are eating approximately TWICE the amount of actual food they were eating before(justy a different type of food)..Sensible exercise programs were followed by both of these guys...And their cholesterol levels sunk, despite consuming lean meats, eggs and other so called "bad" fats...

The real myth is that you can sensibly diet eating cottage cheese and celery stalks...

I've lost some weight on a low calorie/low fat diet. Yes you will loose a substantial amount of muscle as I did but my plans are once I reach a feasible goal, weight wise, I will start weight training and up my protein and calorie intake to offset my training and not feel sluggish.

I went on the 'Fast Diet'. not 'fast' as in speedy, but 'fast' as in abstaining.... you consume around 500 calories/day for 2 days of the week, (mostly plant and protein) and the remaining 5 days, you consume your recommended intake. For women it's 1,500 - 2000 cals/day, usually.

Since June 2013, I have lost 32lbs, and have succeeded in maintaining my new healthier, fitter weight quite easily.

I have an active job, so this worked very well for me.

But only 500/day?

My dietician feels this is asking too much of a system, over a prolonged period and strongly advises against it.

Incidentally, for the film 'Les Miserables' Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway both had to lose a great deal of weight for realism. I understand they only ate 500c's per day, but were constantly supervised and examined by doctors, who scrutinised their progress. Notwithstanding the value of highly-paid film stars, you should treat yourself with no less consideration.

That's what too unrealistic and extreme. What are you only having one meal a day? You will be hungry all the time, that's for sure.

I lost around 15 pounds in 8 weeks earlier this year, eating around 2000 calories a day. Granted, I was extremely stressed at the time, but it's not the number of calories you eat, it is the quality of what you are eating, the balance of your diet/nutrition, and your exercise level.

With so little energy going into your body, you are going to have trouble working out at a high level, if you even have the energy to do so. You will also have trouble concentrating on work or school or whatever you may be doing.

hi to all,

ok. no i am not hungry all the time. no i am not tired all the time. i am not asking what the side effects may be. im asking if anyone has experience with it and losing weight.

it is a recognised medical way to lose weight. when your BMI is in obese this is the diet physicians put you on. most actresses eat around 500 calories a day. in fact two top trainers to the stars get them looking that way by putting them on 600 calorie a day diets.

i am not saying it is a miraculous new and healthy way to do it. i am just saying that it isnt starvation, and it isnt going to make you go into starvation mode and it isnt going to make you not be able to do anything.

understandable the best long term way to lose weight is to have a perfect balance of what goes into your body as well as a fabulous excercise regime. i get that.

but, this is what i am doing. and this is what millions of other people atre doing adn have done, and i am well aware of the pros and cons - the cons are not the ones listed in this thread, as some of the cons listed in this thread are not based on intelligence or research but rather misinformation.

what i would like is to hear from people who HAVE done this and who HAVE good experience.

thank you.

You are talking kgs I assume, most people here are based in the US so to translate that, you are currently 187 lbs roughly and want to get down to 132lbs.

How tall are you?

Medical professionals do NOT advocate 500 cals/day everyday for the long term, not to anyone. It is unhealthy and unsustainable. The VLCD for obese patients is 800 cals, not 500, and even that is not recommended for non-obese people such as yourself, for obvious reasons. If you think that they do, cite your sources.

This may be true, but it's a whole different kettle of fish. If you want to live like an actress, with an actress's habits, then that is your prerogative. Careful that you don't get a DUI and be sure to actually go to rehab when they pull you in.

That sounds like a rather biased thread, don't you think? Kinda like, "Has anyone smoked during their pregnancy? No, I don't want to hear about the cons of it. I just want to know if anyone did and still had a healthy baby".

But again, your life, and your prerogative.

hi - im not sure why you are posting. all your points are noted. although untrue.

i would still like to hear from people who have done this. not those with no experience. that is not biased. that's like writing a thread saying i am learning Spanish and its difficult, id like to hear from other people with the same experience. not people who cant speak any languages and just have an opinion based on biased facts.

i don't want o hear how Spanish is stupid, i want to hear your experience of learning Spanish. that's all. thank you.

your responding to this thread is like your commenting on my smoking weed during my pregnancy, when you have never been pregnant or smoked weed. i would like to hear from people who have done VLCD and their results. like hearing from people who did smoke weed during pregnancy.

For chrissakes.

"Spanish is stupid" is subjective and debatable.

Medical guidelines are usually not 'just based on biased opinion'. If you wish to talk about 'research', maybe you should actually do some yourself.

I'm done with you, anyhow - I'm simply posting the facts so that other readers don't feel tempted to engage in potentially harmful practices. I am sure that you will be as thin as an actress in no time - which was your goal, right? Hopefully you'll still be in acceptable health and physical shape by the time you're done.
