Strike up a conversation with someone sitting near you -- about how you're new and what's going on. That will lead to more contacts -- and you'll have more friends before you know it. If you aren't involved in much, look for things you like to do and join up. Try to get a friend to go in on it with you, but agree that the two of you are looking for new contacts.
