pink_sugar
I'd like some suggestions for low calorie snacks that will curb appetite. I eat lunch shortly after I get to work, so the remaining workday is very long for me and I end up finding myself hungry before I get home since it takes an hour to get home with public transit. My favorite snack that really helps so far is apples and peanut butter. What are some other suggestions?
Andy_K
You can't get much higher calorie than peanut butter. It's good for you, but I use it as a high calorie protein/fat source for bulking. Low calorie it is most certainly not Try vegetables. They're a bit boring but you have to eat a huge amount to get any meaningful number of calories out of them.
Els
Yep, peanut butter is something ridiculous like 2,600kJ/100g last I checked. As a point of comparison, steamed rice is 600... Veggies are really good for giving you a lot of low-calorie bulk, but not sure how well they qualify for snacks. If you can bring yourself to munch some carrot or celery sticks, then go for it. As far as snacks go, I'm a fan of fruits + low-fat yogurt myself. I know fruits are mostly just water, but some of them are a good source of vitamins and antioxidants. Plus I actually like them.
gaius
The only thing that ever worked for me is drinking a lot of water or eating pure meat with some fat content. Any kind of low calorie junk never filled me up and just added a low amount of calories.

This^^ I always keep some venison or beef jerky around to snack on..If its made right, it tastes good and is loaded with protein..Just got to watch the sodium intake.. FitChick
Sure, nut butters have calories but you only need to eat a tablespoon of those good fats to feel satisfied. That's why people cannot sustain low fat diets. They eventually binge. You need a balanced diet that you will carry over into maintenance mode after you've lost the weight. If you have nut allergies, try hummus with veggies. I eat an ounce of my favorite cheese with a pear or apple. Filling due to fat and fiber. Greek yogurt satisfies a sweet tooth and has probiotics good for the gut. Supermarkets always have sales 10/$10.
Author pink_sugar
Yeah, I realize peanut butter isn't exactly low calorie, but it does keep me full for several hours. Sometimes between the time I have lunch at work and the time I get home to make dinner, usually it's 8-9 hours, so I need a snack that will keep me full for awhile. Am orange or 100 calorie granola bar just doesn't cut it I'm afraid. I do have some beef jerky in my desk and I find that does definitely work well!
ooglesnboogles
I'm a big fan of beef jerky. I can't eat it anymore (due to dental issues), but it was always in my backpack for long trips before. Sometimes when I visit friends in the city (about an hour train ride away), I'll eat a normal lunch early then not eat until I'm home for dinner, to save money. A couple pieces of beef jerky in the middle seems to tide me over, and I'm not one to easily be filled
Ruby Slippers
It's best to combine lean protein with a fruit or vegetable, so your stomach has to work on it longer and you feel more satisfied. Snack ideas that fit this description: Grilled chicken/turkey/lean protein in a crispy lettuce wrap (like a romaine leaf). Easy to pack for lunch, and will still be crunchy and tasty when you get it out of the fridge later. Low-fat or 2% milk cottage cheese + a cup of fruit. Greek yogurt + fruit. Salad with chicken, turkey, tofu, etc. Hummus and vegetables. A piece of fruit and a cup of almond milk or similar. Half a tuna salad sandwich on whole grain bread (bread is carbs, but works well). Can pack ahead. Hard-boiled egg + carrots/cucumbers/vegetables. You can go on forever. Pick a lean protein, add a fruit or vegetable.
